Nailers Fall to Warriors, 3-1
GREENVILLE, SC – Reid McNeill netted his first professional goal for the Wheeling Nailers on Thursday night, as they visited the Greenville Road Warriors. Unfortunately, that was the only celebrating that Wheeling did, as the Road Warriors defeated the Nailers, 3-1 at BI-LO Center.
After a scoreless first period, the Road Warriors opened the scoring at the 1:25 mark of the second period. Danny Hobbs took a shot from the right point, that ended up being blocked in front of the net. The puck bounced its way to Marc-Olivier Vallerand, who slipped a shot inside of the left post, putting Greenville ahead, 1-0.
The third period featured the most scoring in the game, as the two clubs combined to light the lamp three times. Ryan Flanigan gave the Road Warriors a 2-0 lead at the 4:37 mark, when he used his stick like a ramp, to lift the puck up and over Peter Delmas, off of an initial shot taken by Jordie Johnston.
Wheeling answered 50 seconds later, when McNeill blasted home his first professional goal from the right point. Cam Fergus picked up the lone assist, after winning a battle for the puck behind the net. With 26 seconds to go, Greenville capped off the victory, courtesy of Chad Ziegler’s empty netter, giving the game a 3-1 final score.
Connor Knapp earned the victory in his first ECHL start for the Road Warriors, stopping 34 of the 35 shots he faced. Delmas took the tough luck defeat, despite turning aside 36 of the 38 shots sent his way.
The Nailers will visit the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday at 7:35, p.m. continuing their eight-game road trip.
