Mountaineers To Face Delaware In First Round

While the West Virginia University men’s basketball team isn’t returning to the NCAA Tournament, the Mountaineers women are.

When the field of 64 teams was revealed Monday night Coach Mike Carey and his team learned they will be headed to Newark, N.J. for a Sunday date against Delaware. Tipoff is noon.

The Mountaineers (17-13) are the No. 11 seed in the Bridgeport region. The Blue Hens (30-3) are the No. 6 seed and earned the automatic bid for winning the Colonial Athletic Conference.

West Virginia is hoping to rebound from a crushing defeat against Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament. The Mountaineers led by 19 at halftime before falling by one.

The Mountaineers are hoping to snap a string of three consecutive second-round losses in the tournament.

Delaware enters the tournament riding school-record 25-game winning streak. Senior Elena Delle Donne (25.3 ppg.) is the leading scorer in CAA history.

The winner of the WVU-Delaware tilt will face the winner of the North Carolina-Albany game in the second round.
