Pair of locals honored by WVC

PRINCETON – West Liberty’s Aaron Schneid has been honored as the West Virginia Conference’s Male Field Athlete of the Week.

The Hilltoppers sophomore, a three-time state champion during his schoolboy days at Wheeling Central, won one event and placed in two others at Saturday’s Bethany College Invitational.

Schneid prevailed in the hammer throw with an effort of 47.69 meters. He also earned a fourth-place finish in the shot put (13.06m) and was fifth in the discus (40.54m).

Concord’s Robbie Peters was the WVIAC Male Track Athlete of the Week. Concord’s Donnie Kirk earned WVIAC Female Track Athlete of the Week honors while Wheeling Jesuit’s Haley Campbell was the WVIAC Female Field Athlete of the Week.

Pitt hires Duquesne coach

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson vowed to do a nationwide search while looking for a coach to revive a reeling women’s basketball program.

It led to the coach next door.

The Panthers hired Duquesne coach Suzie McConnell-Serio to lead the program into the ACC next fall.

The 46-year-old McConnell-Serio went 123-68 in six seasons with the Dukes.

Pirates recall RHP Morris

PITTSBURGH – Right-handed reliever Bryan Morris was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis by the Pittsburgh Pirates before Friday night’s game with the Cincinnati Reds and fellow righty Chris Leroux was designated for assignment.

Leroux had a 6.75 ERA in two relief appearances this season, allowing three runs and four hits in three innings with six walks and three strikeouts. He can opt for free agency if he clears waivers rather than accept an assignment to Indianapolis.

LeBlanc Wins Hobey Baker

PITTSBURGH – The Hobey Baker Memorial Award announced Friday the 2013 recipient of college hockey’s top individual prize is Drew LeBlanc from St. Cloud State University. The announcement came during the NCAA Frozen Four championship in a live ceremony held at Consol Energy Center and aired live on NHL Network.

The masterful playmaking center had an outstanding season leading the nation with 37 assists in 42 games while contributing 13 goals for 50 total points (seventh in the nation).
