State Softball: Central, Park Fall in Openers

VIENNA – Both Wheeling Park and Wheeling Central dropped opening-round games Wednesday morning at the West Virginia High School state Softball Tournament.

Hurricane 2, Wheeling Park 1

Amber Null hit a grounder between shortstop and third base, bringing in Addie Fullen with the winning run as Courtney Rogers and Hurricane got past Wheeling Park.

Hurricane (31-6) got on the board first when Linzie Reynolds reached on an error that scored Cassi Seargent in the fourth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Carly Greer scored on an error by the shortstop to tie the game for the Patriots (20-6).

Greer added a single in the second as was the only Park player to get into scoring position all morning.

She also pitched and surrendered three hits and struck out one.

Marissa Tucker added Park’s other hit, a single.

Rogers struck out three for Hurricane.

Buffalo 1, Wheeling Central 0

Barbara England drove in Taylor Birscoe on a single in the sixth inning and that held up as Buffalo sent Wheeling Central to the loser’s bracket.

The Maroon Knights had a chance to get even with two on in the seventh, but a groundout ended the threat -and the game.

Madison Basinger surrendered three hits and struck out eight Central (21-9).

Sydney Bennington had two singles for the Maroon Knights, who had five hits.

Both Wheeling Park and Wheeling Central were scheduled to play a little after 4 p.m. today.
