Wheeling Park Will Play for Title
VIENNA – It was a bag of mixed emotions for the Ohio Valley on Thursday morning at the West Virginia State Softball Tournament at Jackson Park. Wheeling Park (21-6) advanced to the Class AAA state title contest with a 5-3 victory against Jefferson, but Wheeling Central saw its season come to an end with a heartbreaking, 7-6, loss at the hands of Moorefield.
The Patriots have to beat Hurricane twice for the title, beginning at 2 p.m.
Jefferson was in a giving mood Thursday and Wheeling Park was more than willing to take the charity. The Cougars made five errors, undoing the work of pitcher Alexandria Witt, who limited the Patriots to four hits.
After Jefferson had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Wheeling Park struck twice in the third as Marissa Tucker stole home and Ashleigh Sidon scored on an error. The Cougars went back ahead in the fourth on a two-run homer by Witt.
However, Park’s Kelsi Johnson launched a solo homer on the first pitch of the sixth to tie it, then the Patriots won it via a pair of seventh-inning errors.
Moorefield 7, Wheeling Central 6
The Knights scored two runs in the top of the seventh to knot the score but couldn’t hold the lead as Brooke Riggleman’s second double brought in the winninger in the bottom half.
Wheeling Central fell behind in the second inning and was forced to battle back throughout. After Moorefield scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-4, the Maroon Knights struck back as Sarah Henry doubled in Allie Cook, before Sydney Bennington singled in Ashley Gast to tie it.
Cook and Cassidy McCord singled twice. Joni Zavolta had a double, while Vanessa Saseen added a pair of RBI.
