Cadiz Defeats Wheeling, 19-11
WHEELING – There was a marathon at the 1-470 baseball fields Tuesday night.
Chase Hopkins doubled and tripled among three hits, drove in two and scored five runs as Cadiz Post 39 beat Wheeling Post 1, 19-11.
The game started at its 6 p.m. scheduled time, but was delayed nearly two hours due to weather.
Both teams, however, where able to turn in some runs before lightning took over the skies.
Cadiz jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, fueled by back-to-back triples by Jon Borkowski and Nick Patrone.
Wheeling answered back when Dom Ellis doubled in Andrew Kowalo and Jesse Hartley before Nate Bakaitis doubled to drive in Ellis to make it 4-3.
That’s when thunder struck and sent both teams to their respective dugouts.
When action resumed, so did the hitting for Post 39.
Cadiz used a three-hit, two-run second inning to extended its lead to 5-3.
Post 39 added four more runs to its total in the fourth, two of which came from bases loaded walks, to take a 12-5 advantage and tacked on two more in the fifth on an Eric Williams hit into right field.
A Dom Ellis RBI single and three unearned runs in the bottom half of the sixth helped Wheeling cut the deficit to 14-9, but that would be as close as Post 1 would come as Cadiz scored five runs in the seventh, highlighted by a Andrew Chlon two-run double, to put the game on ice.
Cadiz ended the game with every player earning at least one hit and totaled 16 on the night, while Wheeling ended with nine, three coming off the bat of Kowalo.
Justice Jackson tripled among two hits and scored three runs for Post 1, while Ellis doubled among two hits and drove three in.
