Maroscher Wins W.Va. Open

Staff Report

WHEELING – A day after ousting the man who has owned the tournament for the better part of a decade, No. 2 seed Keith Whittingham fell to top-seeded Mitchell Maroscher, 6-2, 6-4, in the Men’s Open Singles finals of the West Virginia Open on Sunday at Oglebay.

Whittingham was coming off a semifinal victory against five-time champion Jeremy McClelland but couldn’t get it going against Maroscher, who won his first W.Va. Open title.

Maroscher, who defeated Garrett Gardner in his singles semifinal a day earlier, turned around Sunday and teamed with Gardner to beat McClelland and Stephen D’Angelo, 6-4, 6-1, to claim the crown in the Men’s Open Doubles.

On the women’s side, Sara Tsukamoto rallied to defeat Yvon Martinez, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, and take home the Women’s Open Singles title.

Pittsburgh’s Jeffrey Layman enjoyed a big day, as he won the Men’s 35 Singles (7-6, 6-7, 6-0, against Bryan Sauer); Men’s 45 Singles (defeating Wheeling’s Mark Panepinto (3-6, 7-6, 6-0), and both the Mixed 35 Doubles and Mixed Open Doubles with partner Summer Wise.

Other winners were Diego Gattesco in the NNTRP Men’s 4.0 singles; Andrew Lach in the Men’s 55 Singles, and partners Charles Taylor and Charles Warner in the Men’s 55 Doubles.
