Holgorsen Pleased With Trickett’s Work

MORGANTOWN – Dana Holgorsen admitted Thursday he wasn’t surprised by what he saw out of transfer quarterback Clint Trickett as the West Virginia University football team opened training camp for the 2013 season.

“For a guy who it’s his very first practice here, he did good,” the WVU head coach said. “Clint’s seasoned. He doesn’t get nervous, and you can tell he has some game experience.”

Trickett completed 66 of 106 passes for 947 yards during his time at Florida State. But he opted to finish his playing days in Morgantown after he fell down the Seminoles’ depth chart this spring.

But even though Trickett is the more experienced quarterback in camp for the Mountaineers, Holgorsen isn’t ready to say Paul Millard and Ford Childress will again be relegated to a backup role.

“We were just running plays, trying to get the offense installed,” Holgorsen said. “We’ll get into some situational stuff later. That’s when I start judging guys to see who’s going to be the man.”

Holgorsen said Childress and Millard are both capable of leading the Mountaineers offense this season, but added that Trickett did not show any signs of being the new kid on the block.

“If there were hesitation and panic and all that stuff, we would have an issue,” Holgorsen said. “He handled it well, so it’s not something I’m concerned with.”

Holgorsen said the first day of practice was “typical, like most practices across the country.” He said the players’ energy levels were high and their attitudes positive.

“Everybody was excited to get back to work,” he said. “We were looking at things like communication, the tempo they play with, and we were pleased with how that went. It went well from an assignment standpoint.”
