Morgantown Too Much For Brooke

By TONY VIOLA

Staff Writer

MORGANTOWN – Morgantown’s 47-7, season-opening romp of Class AAA foe Brooke can best be described in one play.

Following a penalty that backed the Mohigans (1-0) up to their half yard line, running back Chazzy Thomas took the handoff from quarterback Ethan Goldcamp and raced through the Bruins defense for a 99-yard touchdown.

”I just hit the hole and I’m thinking ‘no one is going to catch me,’ ” Thomas, a 5-foot-9, 155-pound senior said. ”I just keep that mindset.”

Not only did no one catch him, nobody even laid a hand on him him as he flew down the field to give Morgantown a 40-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

Though that may be the play fans remember most, Thomas was at it all night as he piled on 274 yards on 18 carries and found the end zone five times.

”I’m just tickled to death for him,” Morgantown coach John Bowers said. ”All camp he’s battled a little bit of an ankle being sore because of that injury,” – the one that ended Thomas’ season during a game against University last year and sidelined the running back for the rest of the regular season as well as playoffs . ”There were days it was real sore. Literally the first really, really healthy practice he had was Wednesday and Thursday of this week. He looked great. He played great.”

So did the rest of the Mohigans.

On Morgantown’s first drive, Goldcamp found Shea Campbell wide open in the flat and connected for a 16-yard score.

Thomas then added scoring runs of 4, 4, and 11 yards to give the Mohigans a 27-0 halftime lead against a Brooke team that had only mustered 54 first-half yards.

”Morgantown is a tremendous football team,” Bruins coach Sean Blumette said. ”We knew they had the speed, the athleticism, the physical grind we knew we were in for a test. There’s no doubt we just played one of the top teams in the state this year.”

Indeed.

”They don’t have a weakness,” Blumette continued. ”Especially with Chazzy back. He’s just electric out there. We hit him and hit him and tried to get a hand one him. You can’t arm tackle the kid, you have to put a body on him. And even when you put a body on him, you better put two because he’s going to run through you.”

Brooke (0-1) broke into the scoring column early in the fourth after a Morgantown fumble gave it the ball at the Mohigans’ 9. Three plays later, Nick Ossman bullied his way into the end zone for 5 yards to make it 40-7.

But, like so many other times in the game, a little positive for the Bruins turned into a huge plus for the Moghians as on the very next play, Dion Tolliver took the kickoff 90 yards to give Morgantown its final score.

It also gave Bowers another notch in the victory column against his alma mater.

”I love the Bruins of Brooke High School,” he said. ”A couple of their players got me a little angry before the game running their gibs a little bit. But I love Brooke County. I often say I tolerate Morgantown and I love the Ohio Valley. Brooke County is a special place.”
