WLU Women Top Yellow Jackets

WEST LIBERTY – If you shoot 50 percent in a game, you’re probably going to win a lot of those games.

Case in point, the West Liberty women’s basketball team.

For the 54th time in the last nine years, the Hilltoppers shot 50 percent in a game, hitting 32 of 62 shots Monday in a 89-75 victory against visiting West Virginia State.

For the 53rd time in those games, West Liberty was victorious.

“For back-to-back games, we’ve had a pretty good percentage shooting from the floor,” West Liberty coach Lynn Ullom said. “We have some kids who can shoot the ball. I thought the difference in this game was when we made the extra-quick pass, we scored on 75 percent of those possessions. When we didn’t make the extra-quick pass, we scored on 25-percent of those possessions.”

Suffice it to say, the Hilltoppers were making a lot of extra quick passes in the final four minutes of the first half, when they went on a 14-2 run to turn a five-point deficit into a 45-38 halftime lead.

Jenn Mohney, who tied with a team-high 22 points, had eight points on the run, including a pair of 3s late in the half.

“That’s been the story of the year for us,” Ullom said. “It’s basketball by committee. Jenn didn’t score a point for us at Charleston Saturday (in an 84-80 West Liberty victory) and she came back to score 22 (Monday night). It’s a different kid stepping up for us every night and that is a great thing to have.”

State did fight back in the second half, going up by as many as four, but Jasmin Kiley took over the game, with 13 of her 22 points as the Hilltoppers pulled away late in the second half.

Emily Bucon, the Wheeling Central product, came off the bench to add 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting and six rebounds.

“She brings a lot of energy to the floor,” Ullom said. “She does the little things. She is becoming a good player.”

Kailee Howe had 13 points and Liz Flowers added 10 for West Liberty (3-3, 2-0 MEC).

“This was not a pretty win,” Ullom said. “But they all look the same in the record book. It’s nice to go into the break undefeated in the conference.”

West Virginia State (3-2, 1-1) got 26 points from Lexy Carson. Asia Greenleaf added 15, Jordan Brock 12 and India Taste 11.

West Liberty outrebounded State 40-35, led by Kierra Simpson’s seven rebounds. West Liberty had 15 assists on its 32 made shots.
