Patriots to Tip Off Season At West Liberty
WEST LIBERTY – West Liberty University athletic director Jim Watson announced that Wheeling Park High School – coached by WLU Hall of Famer Michael Jebbia – will tip off its 2013-14 boys’ basketball season as part of a doubleheader at West Liberty on Dec. 17.
The Patriots will take on fellow West Virginia Class AAA power Preston in the first game at 5:45 p.m. with the unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Hilltoppers hosting Cedarville (Ohio) University at 7:30 p.m.
A limited number of advance tickets for Wheeling Park students and fans will go on sale Monday at the high school.
Doors to the ASRC will open at 5 p.m. on the night of the doubleheader. Fans are encouraged to use the South Drive entrance to campus and follow the signs to the parking area behind the ASRC, which provides easy access to the rear ticket gate.
“We’re very excited to welcome Michael back to campus,” Watson said. “It’s a great opportunity for players and fans of both schools to get a taste of the college atmosphere and also to see the nation’s No. 1-ranked NCAA Division II team in action. We’re looking forward to a great night of basketball at the ASRC.”
A four-year starter at West Liberty from 1998-2002, Jebbia was a 3-time first-team All-WVIAC pick and became only the second Hilltopper to surpass the 2,000-point milestone with 2,067 career points.
A Wheeling Park graduate who still holds the school’s career scoring record, Jebbia carries a 131-47 (.736) record into his eighth season as the Patriots’ head coach. He led The Park to three straight state tournament trips from 2009-11 with current Hilltopper standout Kelvin Goodwin playing a key role.
The Patriots, who fell to Morgantown in last year’s regional final, will be led by returning starters Ryan Reinbeau (13.0 ppg.) and Luke Saseen (11.5 ppg.). They combined for 69 3-pointers. New to the scene is Linsly transfer Toddy Goodwin-Rowe, who averaged 11.2 ppg. for the Cadets.
