SHADYSIDE – Shadyside won its first home game of the season Tuesday night in boys’ high school basketball action with a 67-55 victory against Zanesville Rosecrans (1-2).
Veteran coach Ed Andes was pleased with his team rallying from a six point deficit to take control of the game in the fourth quarter.
“We played a lot better in the fourth quarter than we did in the last fourth quarter,” Andes said citing the loss in their home opener. “This one we finished. We kept the lead, stayed on top.”
Overall we improved a lot in a week,” Andes added. “We shot better at the foul line and played with more confidence.”
Andes said that the formula working for the Tigers was to feed it inside to 6-foot-3 Shane Johnson. Scoring a game high 25 points, the sophomore had 10 points in the fourth quarter including a 6 of 8 outing at the charity stripe.
His classmate John Schuetz netted three treys in the second half, two of those in the final quarter as Shadyside outscored the Bishops 23-12.
Junior Zach Frizzi carried the Tigers in the first half. One of just two returning lettermen, Frizzi dropped in half of his 22 points in the opening half to give the Tigers a 16-13 advantage going into the second.
The Bishops won the second quarter 16-15 and the third 14-13, using that momentum to put Shadyside in a 6-point hole to begin the fourth quarter,
Johnson finished with a double-double adding 14 rebounds to his game high point total for Shadyside.
“We like to spread it around and ideally we will have four players in double digits,” Andes said.
John Scheutz finsihed with nine points, all on 3s, while Logan Cline contributed seven points. Both were 2 of 2 from the foul line.
Aaron Gehlken paced the Bishops with 22 points, while Jesse Melick netted 17 and led the visitors with nine rebounds.
Rosecrans shot 20 of 53 from the floor making good on just 5 of 19 from outside the arc.
Zanesville netted 10 of 14 charity shots, pulled down 30 rebounds while turning it over just 11 times.
Shadyside (1-1) will make up a road game at Shenandoah Saturday weather permitting.
