Number of OVAC Stars Named All-East District

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a banner day for the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference as the Associated Press in Ohio announced its boys’ and girls’ basketball All-Eastern District Teams.

All told, two players and three coaches took home top honors.

Beginning on the boys’ side, Steubenville’s Mike Haney was selected Division II Coach of the Year and was joined by one of his own, senior Adam Sterling (15.3 points per game), who was named to the first team. Other first teamers were Buckeye Local senior Brennan Czuchran (21.3 ppg.), East Liverpool senior Hayden Cunningham (18.0 ppg.) and Jared Lyder (22.0 ppg.) of Beaver Local.

Cambridge’s Jodan Watson and Big Red’s Brandon Herring-Hill were selected to the second team.

After averaging 18.5 points a night, Martins Ferry post Robert Vargo took home Division III Player of the Year. Ben Porter, whose Union Local boys finished the regular season 20-1, is the Coach of the Year.

Joining Vargo on the first team are the Jets’ Gavin Porter (14.0) and Colton McKivitz (13.0), both juniors, as well as the Fort Frye tandem of Seth Legraen (17.4) and Chandler Lang (10.9). Second-teamers include Buckeye Trail’s Tyler Starr, Bellaire sophomore Michael Neil, Harrison Central’s Nick Kowalski, and Monroe Central’s Bryan Duffy.

Caldwell swept honors in Division IV as senior Jonathan Weichman (21.8) and Clint Crane were named Player and Coach of the Year, respectively. In addition to Weichman, local first-team representatives are Steubenville Catholic senior Ryan Fletcher (17.0) and Shadyside sophomore John Mihcael Schuetz (15.0).

Bridgeport’s Q.J. Williams, Frontier’s Drew Snyder and Toronto’s Blaze Glenn all made second team.

Meanwhile, on the girls’ end of things, Harrison Central’s Nick Yourkovich was named Division III Coach of the Year. His Huskies standout, junior Katie Ellzy, who checked in at 18.2 points per-game, was named a first-team selection.

Ellzy is joined by Union Local senior Cori Medley (15.4) and Fort Frye’s Brooke Borich (18.0). Second-teamers are St. Clairsville’s Carlee Gillespie, Fort Frye’s Morgan Lietdke and Harrison Central’s Kara Dunfee.

Indian Creek junior Bre Berryman (22.2), Steubenville’s Emiley Masloski (13.8) and Hallie Stocker (17.0) of Cambridge are all first-team picks in Division II. Second-teamers are Mytia Barker of Steubenville and Nikayla Edgell of East Liverpool.

In Division IV, senior Nicole Smolenak (11.8) of once-beaten Bridgeport, is joined on the first team by Conotton Valley junior Olivia Bower (21.2), River sophomore Jensen Caretti (22.4) and Frontier’s Kelsea Daugherty. Area second-team picks are Bridgeport’s Caitlyn Kroll, Shenandoah’s Raechel Rossiter, Toronto’s Lindsay Bodnar and Marissa Rose of St. John.
