Union Local rermains undefeated
MORRISTOWN – During the course of producing an undefeated start, the Union Local boys’ basketball team has had many players shine.
Friday night, it was David Paulick’s turn in the spotlight.
The sophomore center poured in a career-high 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Jets flew past John Marshall, 72-50, for the second time this season before a packed house inside ”The Hangar” on Senior Night.
Union Local, the state’s top team in The Associated Press Ohio Division III Poll, moved to 19-0 and is three games away from securing an undefeated regular-season. All that stands in its way are two games in the Wheeling Hospital OVAC Boys Tournament next week and a possible make-up game against Indian Creek.
Trenton Tipton, Gavin Porter and Eric Dunfee each added 11 points for the Jets.
McDiffitt missed the game after injuring his knee in Union Local’s victory against Bellaire on Thursday night.
Porter said he saw a doctor Friday and is scheduled for an MRI on Sunday.
Union Local broke the game open with a 15-2 run in the third quarter giving the Jets a 52-34 lead as the quarter ended.
Paulick, who had 18 points at halftime, got the surge started with a pair of layups making the score 41-32.
Later, he dropped in a layup courtesy of a behind-the-back pass from Porter that got the UL crowd on its feet and gave UL a 45-34 advantage.
Tipton followed with a 3-pointer a short time later making the score 48-34. Layups by Paulick and Dunfee capped the run.
The Monarchs (3-12) did all they could to stay with the Jets early, keeping the deficit under 10 for most of the game until UL’s third-quarter explosion. And they did it with outside shooting.
Tanner Filben paced JM with 17 points. Ronnie Brown canned three 3-pointers to finish with nine.
