WLU Women Shoot Lights Out in Charleston
CHARLESTON – No. 2 seed West Liberty University scored the first nine points of the game and never looked back Thursday afternoon in routing No. 9 seed UVA-Wise, 82-57, in a Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinal at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum.
It was the 12th win in the last 13 games for Coach Lynn Ullom’s surging Hilltoppers (20-9), who will meet No. 3 seed Charleston (20-7) in Saturday’s noon semifinal.
The Golden Eagles held off No. 6 seed Urbana, 72-64, in Thursday’s other afternoon quarterfinal.
“We’re not a team that’s known for running a lot of set plays,” Ullom said, “but we ran a lot more than we usually do. The girls ran them pretty well which created a lot of open shots for us and we were able to knock them down.”
West Liberty literally bombed the Cavaliers (10-18) into submission, draining a season-high 14 3-point shots, draining 10-of-16 from behind the arc before halftime.
Five of those long-range shots came in the final six minutes of the opening half and played a major role in helping the Hilltoppers put the game on ice.
Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jenn Mohney gave WLU its first double-digit lead, 34-21, with 5:13 showing on the first half clock and it never dropped under 10 points the rest of the way.
Colleen McCormick banked in a 3-pointer just ahead of the halftime buzzer to send West Liberty into the locker room with a 43-30 lead.
The Hilltoppers opened the second half on a 17-6 run – hitting their first three 3-point attempts – to go up 60-36 with 13:24 remaining and led by as many as 30 points down the stretch.
West Liberty wound up hitting a season-high 50 percent (14-for-28) of its 3-point shots with five different Hilltoppers making at least one shot from behind the arc.
“It’s a confidence thing,” said West Liberty’s Jenn Mohney, who came off the bench to hit 5 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. “Once one of us gets a couple of shots to go, it seems like it gets everybody going.”
Liz Flowers made a run at a triple-double to lead West Liberty with 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. McCormick added 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench, including a 3-for-4 day from the 3-point arc. Reynesha Archer had a game-high 22 points for UVA-Wise.
