Park, Eagles Beaten

VIENNA – It was a tough opening to Day 2 of the West Virginia State Softball Tournament at Jackson Memorial State Park. Battling for spots in their respective championship games, both OVAC entrants, Wheeling Park and Magnolia, were sent to the loser’s bracket.

In Class AAA, the Patriots had a tough time getting anything going against Lincoln County starting – and winning – pitcher Brooke West in a 2-0 setback. Wheeling Park was scheduled to play Musselman beginning at roughly 11 a.m. in an elimination contest.

Meanwhile, Magnolia resumed its game with Class A dynasty Buffalo by trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning. It didn’t get much better from there for the Blue Eagles.

Three-time defending champion Buffalo tacked on five more runs to win going away, 6-0, and send the Blue Eagles down the long, hard road to a championship.

Magnolia was also scheduled to play an elimination game at 11 a.m., this one against Moorefield.

Whether the championships will be handed out today on schedule, is anyone’s guess. Heavy rain was moving into the Vienna area at press time, meaning games could be played Friday instead.

A day earlier, Skylar Carrington was on her game as Wheeling Park took down Ripley, 7-1.

Likewise, the Blue Eagles received a strong pitching outing from their own let-hander, Mallory Chapman, knocking off Sherman by a 4-2 count.
