Stalder, King Go Deep In Ferry’s 5-1 Win Over St. C.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Morgan Stalder and Tyrah King both hit home runs as Martins Ferry put a 5-1 loss on homestanding St. Clairsville on Thursday.

It was the first career homer for the senior Stalder, as she took the second pitch of the game over the left-center field fence to give Martins Ferry a 1-0 lead.

The Red Devils tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning as Lauren Figura doubled in Michaela Miller.

The defense held for both squads as St Clairsville threw out King trying to score on a hit by Brooklyn Monroe in the sixth inning, after the sophomore power hitter ripped a triple to kick off the inning. Martins Ferry stranded its fifth baserunner as Figura flagged down a comebacker in the circle to end the threat.

The Red Devils went in order in the bottom half to set up the deciding inning.

Katie Webb started off the seventh with a single. Katie Southerland got called out attempting to bunt when the ball bounced back and tagged her in front of home plate.

Kelsey Spielvogel singled and took a gifted trip to second base setting the table for the top of the order Shaye DeLeonardis. Figura struck out the batter to get the second out but Stalder was not to be denied and punched a single to right field that scored both Webb and Spievogel.

Stalder had little time to rest on the base as King came to the plate and crushed an outside pitch that sailed over the fence for a two-run shot.

Figura got the next batter to ground out back to her but the damage was done and St. Clairsville was in a 5-1 hole.

Mackenzie Otto got the bottom of the seventh off to a good start with a single but the next batter was retired on a popout to short center. Ashley Baker singled to revive the rally but Riders reliever Ciera Beall got the strikeout to leave the hosts down to their last out.
