Wheeling Central Lacrosse Seeks Second Title
WHEELING – Wheeling Central will be seeking the school’s second state lacrosse championship when the Maroon Knights battle top-seeded University High Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trace Fork Soccer Complex in Charleston.
The No. 2-seeded Maroon Knights knocked off Wheeling Park, 13-5, in last weekend’s semifinals while University, the defending state champions, advanced to the final by beating Morgantown, 14-1.
Leading the Kevin Maloney-coached Central attack this season are Josh Pawloski (58 goals, 14 assists), Michael Tighe (52 goals, 31 assists) and Ben Duplaga (33 goals, 55 assists). Duplaga notched a school record seven assists in two different games.
A trio of Knights – Patrick Hurley (23 goals), Conner Calmbacher (17 goals) and Luke Fahey (12 goals) – have provided offensive support. Justin Leonard missed several games with a shoulder injury but returned to action last weekend.
The Central defense has been keyed by Joey John, Gage Siebieda, Nick Thompson and Chantz Chambers along with goalie Chadd Robrecht. Thomas Stanley has excelled taking the faceoffs.
University defeated Central during the regular season.
The Maroon Knights won the state championship in 2010, defeating University, 13-12, behind tournament MVP Zach Stahl. Maloney was at the helm.
