EAST SPRINGFIELD – Nolan Marcus outdueled Mario Lombardi.

Led by a strong outing by Marcus, the Richmond Post 740 baseball team defeated Weirton Post 10, 3-1, Thursday evening at home.

Marcus struck out 14 batters without walking a batter while Lombardi delivered four strikeouts and three walks.

“It was a well-pitched game, and a well-played game,” Richmond (8-12) head coach Sam Davis said. “Due to the weather and other things, Nolan hasn’t started in a while. I was a little worried about that, but he gave us a strong effort. He was really sharp. He had command of his pitchers. If he pitches like that, and we play good defense behind him, we have a chance to win every game he starts.

“Their pitcher pitched a nice ballgame. We got some key infield hits.

“It was a well-played game. We were real fortunate to come away with the win.”

Both teams collected six hits on the day.

“Both pitchers pitched very well,” Weirton (6-3) coach Bill Magnone said. “Their pitcher pitched a heck of a game. He kept us off-balance.

“Mario has pitched for us a few times. Every game he has pitched, he has pitched well. He pitched a heck of a game. We just did not give him enough support.”

Both pitchers helped themselves in the field and at the plate. Lombardi recorded two assists, while Marcus had one. Offensively, Marcus singled, while Lombardi delivered a, run-scoring single to produce the lone run of the game for Post 10.

For Weirton, Mitch Viakley and Dom Sylvestri each collected a double, while Patrick Reardon, Will Bowser and Matt Cessna all singled.
