Davis to Lead Ohio OVAC All-Stars

Earning the right to coach in the Rudy Mumley OVAC All-Star Game takes a total team effort.

And that’s not just from the players’ perspective.

The coaching staff must be on the same page and Jose Davis, who will lead Ohio in the OVAC All-Star Game, has been fortunate to have that luxury since he began his coaching career.

Davis and many of the coaches who played a key part in back-to-back trips to the Ohio playoffs and the 2013 OVAC title for Bellaire will join him on the sideline on Sunday, July 27 at Wheeling Island Stadium for the OVAC Game.

“One of the most important things when you look at being a coach is loyalty and our staff has had that,” Davis said. “It’s always important when you build a staff that you don’t want to have to train someone to think how you think, but in the same sense, you’d like them to have similar thoughts and philosophies on how you’re going to accomplish.”

While they earned the right to coach in the Mumley Classic through their work at Bellaire, many of these staff members will follow Davis to St. John Central.

The players and coaches both report to camp on Sunday, July 20 to begin their week-long camp at Bethany College.

Here’s a capsule look at the Ohio coaching staff:

JOSE DAVIS – This current St. John Central coach spent five years across the street at his alma mater prior to stepping down in January.

Davis posted a 27-25 career record at Bellaire High School, leading the Big Reds to the OVAC Class 3A championship this past season as well as a piece of the Buckeye 8 title. Bellaire also qualified in both 2012 and 2013 for the postseason.

For his efforts, Davis was named Eastern District Coach of the Year in Division V.

Davis, who was a member of the Ohio All-Star Team in 1996, had brilliant playing career, which led him to Kent State University and an eventual professional career in Arena Football.

Jose and his wife Amy have two sons, Javon (14) and Aiden (8).

CASEY DAVIS – This wide receivers and defensive backs coach has two years of experience at the varsity level.

He spent each of the past two seasons working under Jose Davis with the Big Reds and will join him at St. John Central this fall.

Davis was a letterman at Bellaire High School during his playing career in both football and baseball.

He then enrolled at Ohio University Eastern.

JUSTIN GREEN – A former St. Clairsville Red Devil standout, Green has been working alongside Jose Davis for four years.

Green will continue to work under Davis at St. John Central. He’ll work this week with the quarterbacks and defensive backs.

After graduating from St. C. in 1998, Green attended Youngstown State University.

Green owns and operates Source Fitness in St. Clairsville.

RYAN McMAHON – This member of the Buckeye State staff will work with the offensive and defensive lines as well as special teams during OVAC week.

McMahon has been a football coach for nine years, including the last five under Jose Davis. Along with football, McMahon has experience coaching junior high basketball and is expected to continue to coach under Davis at St. John this season.

McMahon, who graduated from Bellaire in 2001, owns a bachelor’s degree in social studies and special education from West Liberty University.

ADAM SHALLCROSS – This former Bellaire standout has been coaching football for five years, all of which have been spent under Jose Davis.

Shallcross was a stellar offensive lineman and went on for a four-year career at Washington & Jefferson College, earning his degree there. He played center at the collegiate level.

Adam and his wife, Melissa, reside in Wheeling.

SHAWN VALLORIC – This former Big Reds’ multi-sport standout has been teaching and coaching at his alma mater for 15 years.

Valloric worked under John Magistro, Gregg Bonar and Jose Davis during his coaching stint with the Big Reds’ football program. He will work with the running backs and linebackers this week.

Along with working on the football staff, Valloric currently serves as the head track coach at Bellaire and he’s also worked on the cross country staff.

After graduating from Bellaire in 1994 and playing in the OVAC All-Star Game, Valloric attended Otterbein College in Columbus, finishing his degree in 1998.
