Post 10 Pulls Out Close Victory over Post 3
WEIRTON – Mitch Viakley brought the power at the plate and on the mound.
Viakley struck out nine and hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead the Weir Post 10 baseball team to a 5-4 victory over Moundsville Post 1 Thursday evening at Bowman Field.
“Sometimes, it is just important to get the win,” Weirton head coach Bill Magnone said. “We are still not playing our best. We did fight unlike last night against Wheeling.
“Except for a few walks, Mitch pitched his butt off for us again. He also got the hit we needed.”
Viakley walked four and gave up five hits.
Moundsville struck first, but Weirton had answer.
“They did,” Moundsville head coach Bill Burkett said. “We can’t hit. We can’t catch. That put us at 8-14.
“It was a good ballgame. We had some errors. It was the same for them. We are not playing good enough.”
Post 10 produced nine hits en route to the win.
Individually, Will Larch collected a single and a run-scoring double, Kyle Woodruff and Will Bowser each finished with a run-scoring single and Kelean Welch contributed a double. Also, Matt Cessna, Mario Lombardi and Sam Hockenberry all tallied singles.
Both teams committed four errors in the game, and Post 10 made some mental mistakes in the field, including a botched rundown and a missed tag at the plate, that did not result in errors.
“We still have to play better,” Magnone said. “We are trying. We are bouncing people all over the field to see what works best.”
Post 3 plated a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Post 10 plated a pair of runs in the home half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Welch doubled with one out, and he scored on a base hit by Bowser to tie the score at 1. Next, Larch doubled home Bowser to make it 2-1.
Moundsville tallied its second run of the game in the third inning to tie the score. The run came as a result of an error.
“We hurt ourselves,” Magnone said. “We shoot ourselves in the foot every game. We give away way too many runs.”
Weirton regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
With two outs, Hockenberry reached on an infield single, and he moved up to second on a throwing error. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and he scored on a single by Woodruff to make the score 3-2.
Moundsville tied the score on a base hit in the top of the fifth.
Post 10 regained the lead in the fifth.
Larch led off the inning with a single, and after a fly out Viakley homered over the fence in left field to give Weirton a 5-3 advantage.
Post 3 plated a run in the sixth on another single to close within 5-4, but that was as close as the visitors got in the game.
“It is another Area win,” Magnone said. “We still have to play better if we want to have a shot in the Area Tournament.
Moundsville’s next game is at St. Marys. Moundsville also plays Elkins and St. Marys this weekend.
Weirton is scheduled to play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at home against St. Marys. Weirton also has a game against Bridgeport.
“We have three games left before the tournament,” Magnone said. “The seeds are not set. There is still a lot of Area games left to be played. There has been a lot of Area games rained out. St. Marys still has to play us twice and Wheeling and Moundsville once.”
