Sharks Ink Deal With Wingels

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – The San Jose Sharks have agreed to a three-year contract with restricted free agent forward Tommy Wingels.

Agent Dan Plante on Monday confirmed the move that will keep Wingels in San Jose. CSNBayArea.com first reported the signing and said the contract is worth $7.4 million.

Wingels was a key component for the Sharks last season when he ranked fifth on the team with 16 goals to go along with 22 assists in 77 games. He also led the Sharks with 218 hits and was used as a penalty killer and on the second power-play unit.

Blackhawks hire Jimmy Waite as goaltending coach

CHICAGO (AP) – The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Jimmy Waite to coach their goaltenders.

The hiring was announced on Monday. Waite replaces the fired Steve Weeks.

A former goalie, Waite appeared in 106 games with the Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks and Phoenix Coyotes from 1988 to 1999 and played professionally until 2010. He appeared in 58 games for Chicago over parts of eight seasons from 1988 to 1997.

Waite spent the past three seasons as the goaltending coach for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He is the younger brother of former Blackhawks goaltending coach Stephane Waite.

Ottawa Senators GM

diagnosed with cancer

OTTAWA (AP) – Ottawa Senators general manager and president of hockey operations Bryan Murray has been diagnosed with cancer.

The team confirmed the diagnosis Monday in a statement on its website. The Senators say he’ll begin treatment immediately.

Assistant general managers Pierre Dorion and Randy Lee will manage the hockey operations department in his absence.

The 71-year-old Murray has been with the Senators since June 2004. He spent two full seasons as head coach before replacing the fired John Muckler as GM after guiding Ottawa to the Stanley Cup final in 2007.

He’s also served as coach or general manager at Washington, Detroit, Florida and Anaheim.

Blue Jackets re-sign Corey Tropp, Cody Goloubef

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed forward Corey Tropp and defenseman Corey Goloubef.

Tropp, who played in 44 games last season for the Blue Jackets, signed a two-year extension through the 2015-16 season. He had two goals and eight assists and a team-high plus-11 rating last year after he was acquired off waivers from Buffalo.

A former third-round pick by the Sabres in 2007, he has five goals and 14 assists in 87 career NHL games with Buffalo and Columbus.

The Blue Jackets’ second pick, 37th overall, in the 2008 draft, Goloubef signed a one-year, two-way (NHL/AHL) deal for next season. He has appeared in 17 career games with Columbus, scoring one goal.

Predators’ Fisher has

ruptured Achilles tendon

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Nashville Predators forward Mike Fisher has a ruptured Achilles tendon that likely will cause him to miss at least the start of the upcoming season.

In a statement released by the team Monday, Predators general manager David Poile said Fisher underwent surgery Thursday after rupturing the tendon during a training session.

“We expect Mike to make a full recovery in four to six months, and look forward to his return to the ice,” Poile said.

The Predators open the season Oct. 9 against Ottawa.

Fisher, 34, served as Nashville’s alternate captain last season and had 20 goals and 29 assists in 75 games. He has 226 goals and 255 assists in 887 career regular-season games.

Fisher tweeted, “Setbacks are opportunities for growth,” on Monday and included a picture of his bandaged lower leg in a walking boot.

The injury seriously hinders Nashville’s plans to boost its offense under new coach Peter Laviolette.

After missing the playoffs for a second straight season, Poile fired coach Barry Trotz and replaced him with Laviolette, emphasizing the need to add more scoring punch to a franchise that traditionally has prided itself on defense.

The Predators have spent much of the offseason attempting to boost that offense. They acquired forward James Neal from the Pittsburgh Penguins and signed free-agent center Olli Jokinen to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

But the Predators would suffer a major blow if they have to spend much of the season without Fisher, one of the team’s top offensive threats since coming to Nashville in a 2011 trade with the Ottawa Senators.
