Cardinals Rank In Top 25 Teams

WHEELING – The Wheeling Jesuit University volleyball team is ranked as one of the Top 25 teams in the nation in a preseason coach’s poll.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) listed Jesuit at No. 17 in its NCAA Division II preseason poll. The Mountain East Conference released its preseason predictions and considers WJU a favorite to repeat as the conference winner.

Last season, Jesuit fell in the semi-finals of the NCAA D-II Tournament and finished the 2013 campaign 17th in the nation.

Coach Christy Benner will need to find a replacement for Jenna Pew, a middle blocker/setter. Pew was an AVCA Third Team All-American a year ago. In addition, Jesuit lost Gabby Guanciale to graduation.

The Cardinals kick-off their season on Sept. 5 when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to compete in a two-day tournament where they will play the No.1 team in the country, Concordia, and No. 7-ranked S.W. Minnesota State.

Jesuits hosts its first home match on Sept. 10 against the University of Indianapolis, which is ranked 24th in the preseason polls.
