Martins Ferry Routs Buckeye Local 36-0

RAYLAND – R.J. Burress got what he hopes is a standout junior season started with 19-carry, 181-yard, two-touchdown performance as Martins Ferry (1-0) opened with a 36-0 rout of Buckeye Local (0-1) on Friday night at World War II Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback James Edwards (7 of 16) hooked up with Jake Barritt on a 10-yard touchdown pass for the Purple Riders, while Bryce Coleman carried in from the 1 for another score. Lucas Agnew returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown to cap the scoring.

Shawn Tustin had 38 yards on 13 carries to pace the Panthers.

Hooper, just a sophomore, performed well under center. He completed 8-of-13 passes for 114 yards. He also rushed for 56 stripes.

Monroe Central 20

Union Local 19

MORRISTOWN – Levi Brown ran for 122 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and a pair of botched extra-point attempts in the fourth quarter helped Monroe Central (1-0) escape with a road victory against Union Local (0-1).

Sophomore Seminoles quarterback Jarrett Hooper played well in his debut, connected on 8 of 13 passes for 114 yards, while running for 56 yards and a touchdown. Gavin Morton returned a fumble 28 yards for another score.

Jets quarterback Shane Smolenak, also a sophomore, threw an 8-yard TD pass to Isaac Goodson, while Spencer Ware led the running game with 101 yards.

Josh Bolyard returned a punt for a Union Local score and Garret Hart carried in from the 3 for another.

Wellsville 24, Toronto 7

WELLSVILLE – Junior quarterback Alik Bradford ran for 114 yards and a touchdown and also threw a TD as Wellsville (1-0) took care of Toronto (0-1).

Zack Mellott had a huge game on the ground for the Tigers, rolling up 23 carries for 163 yards and touchdowns of 76 and 26 yards.

Blaze Glenn paced the Red Knights by completing 13 of 28 for 179 yards, while scoring their lone touchdown on a 6-yard run.

Valley 30, Bridgeport 14

PINE GROVE – Trey Streets threw for 179 yards and two scores in addition to running for 31 yards and another score as Valley topped Bridgeport.

Tucker Cain and Joey Preat were each on the receiving end of a Streets touchdown pass, while Peyton Palmer rushed for 50 yards and a score for the Lumberjacks (1-0).

Bailey McGrath ran for 36 yards and a score and also threw a 5-yard touchdown pass for the Bulldogs (0-1).

John Glenn 34

Barnesville 8

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Collin Wilson scored on his lone carry, a 25-yard jaunt, but it wasn’t enough as Barnesville (0-1) dropped its opener to John Glenn (1-0).

The Shamrocks were held to 201 yards of offense and turned the ball over four times.

Clay-Battelle 54

Paden City 14

PADEN CITY – Hayden Hizer threw for 80 yards and a score, but it was not enough as Paden City fell to Clay-Battelle.

Kane Pyles rushed for 97 yards and was on the receiving end of Hizer’s touchdown pass for the Wildcats (0-1).

Bryce Cross also ran for 34 yards and a score for Paden City.

Frontier 34

Shenandoah 14

SARAHSVILLE – Rodney Barnes rushed for 124 yards and returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score as Frontier beat Shenandoah.

Damon Metheney caught two passes for 94 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars (1-0), while Mitch Reynolds completed half his passes for 156 yards and a TD.

Michael Vanfossen rushed for 165 yards on 22 carries and a score for the Zeps (0-1).
