Weir Falls In Season Opener
WEIRTON – The Fairmont Senior girls’ soccer team controlled the ball for the majority of its game against Weir, and the Polar Bears capitalized on all of their time in possession of the ball by scoring a goal in each half en route to a 2-1 victory against the Red Riders in both team’s season opener Friday afternoon at Jimmy Carey Stadium.
The Polar Bears scored their two goals less than 13 minutes apart.
Sofia Sansalone and Sophie Manchin each netted goals for Fairmont Senior.
Hanna Dragonir recorded the goal for the Red Riders.
Fairmont Senior goalie Kayla DeLorenzo and Weir keeper Alyssa Kelly each tallied four saves on the day.
The Polar Bears outshot the Red Riders, 10-5, in the game. The victors had eight shots on goal, while all five shots by the hosts were on goal.
Weir took six goal kicks in the game, while Fairmont Senior took four. Both teams took two corner kicks.
Brooke 1, Winfield 1
WINFIELD – Cheyenne Hudson scored Brooke’s lone goal as the Bruins tied Winfield.
Alexis Stevens assisted Hudson’s goal, while Paige Famer registered four saves.
Kaylee Cross has an unassisted goal for Winfield.
Buckeye 8 Championship
CADIZ – The first round of the Buckeye 8 golf championship was held Friday at a soggy Cadiz Country Club. East Liverpool, in its first Buckeye 8 championship, grabbed the overall lead with an impressive first round 319, led by first round leader Isaac Davidson’s 1 over round of 73. The tournament will conclude with a second round at Belmont Hills Country Club on Sept. 2. After the second round, the top five golfers will be named first team and the next five placers will be named 2nd team Buckeye 8, as well as crowning the overall team champion.
