Oglebay Tennis Club Getting Ready For Annual Bordas & Bordas W.Va. Open

Bordas & Bordas West Virginia Open Members of the Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club are making final preparations for this year’s Bordas & Bordas West Virginia Open. The tournament will run from Thursday, July 28 through Sunday, July 31. All main draw matches will be played at the Oglebay tennis facility, while consolations will be played at the Wheeling Park Hilltop courts.

The Bordas & Bordas West Virginia Open is the USTA Middle States Sectional Clay Court Championship. Although this is a Middle States event, any player with a United States Tennis Association membership, regardless of residence, is welcome to participate.

Entry to the tournament is open online until noon, Sunday, July 24. Those wanting to register should go to http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments and use the tournament ID number of 350006716. Tournament Director Debbie Pickens said, “We are offering 17 divisions this year with the hopes that there is an event for anyone interested in playing. There are open, age, and ability level events.”

Thanks to the generosity of Bordas & Bordas, Attorneys, PLLC, prize money will again be awarded in the open events. These include men’s and women’s open singles, men’s and women’s open

doubles and mixed open doubles. A total purse of $5,000 will be awarded based on the size of the draws in each of these events. The prize money distribution chart is available on the USTA tournament site.

The age division events include the following: menÃ…fs 35, 45, 55, and 60 singles; menÃ…fs 45 and 55 doubles; and mixed 35 and 50 doubles.

The USTA has established divisions based on the ability of players, with an NTRP rating representing skill level. In this tournament, the following NTRP divisions will be available: men’s 4.0 singles, men’ s 4.0 doubles, women’s 4.0 doubles, and mixed 4.0 doubles. Players at the 4.0 level or below (i.e. 3.0 and 3.5) are also permitted to compete in these events.

On Friday evening, the members of the Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club will host a social for its members and tournament participants. Coordinator Saun Capehart said, “The social is a great opportunity for tennis enthusiasts to get together for a relaxing evening. We gather on the patio at the Oglebay courts beginning at 6 p.m.”

Other event coordinators include Brenda Matzke (facilitator), Kelly Molyneaux (computer),

Harold Pickens (court maintenance) and Mary Lynn Jones (desk volunteers). The assistance of Oglebay’s tennis director Rico Coville and the staff at the courts, especially that of Wayne Barte and Dale Knutsen,

help to make this event run smoothly.

Also during this event, at 11 a.m., Sunday, July 31, the Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club will induct the newest members of the club’s Hall of Fame. Jerry and the late Millie Mulhern will be recognized for their years of contributions to tennis and to the WOTC by being inducted into the Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club’ s Hall of Fame.

“We hope that family and friends of the Mulherns will attend the ceremony to see them honored,” Pickens said.

Daily match schedules and results will be available in the Wheeling News-Register and The Intelligencer.
