Bob Finnegan Memorial Golf Tourney Set For This Weekend
WHEELING — Plenty of spots remain for the 18th Annual Bob Finnegan Memorial Golf Tournament that is scheduled for 7 a.m. on Friday and Saturday at Wheeling Park. It is a wonderful opportunity for golfers of all ages to get out on the course and showcase their skills for a chance to win $3,000 worth of prizes that include gift certificates to Hole’n Run and a trophy.
There are six different competitions in which prizes can be won. The 36-Hole tournament is the regular two-day competition, the Senior tournament for ages 50-59, the Super Senior tournament for ages 60 and up, the Best Ball tournament for teams, the Senior Best Ball tournament but both players on the team must be at-least 50 years of age and the 17 and Under tournament.
Jim Ennis has been the president of the Wheeling Park Men’s Golf Club for 28 years now and has received sponsors from both WTRF-7 and Hole’n Run to get the event started 18 years ago.
“WTRF Channel 7 News is on board and they have been sponsoring the event for years now,” Ennis said. “Bob Finnegan was a terrific man and when he died, I wanted to do something nice for him. I talked to Floyd Shuler, the owner of Hole’n Run and he agreed. He was able to get WTRF on board as well and they have both sponsored it ever since.
“Part of the proceeds from the tournament goes to the Oglebay foundation, which helps kids,” he added.
“The Wheeling Park Men’s Golf Club has given a lot of money to local charities and have even helped the Big Brothers Big Sisters.”
Not only does the tournament benefit kids and people in need along with honoring a great man, it also gives people a chance to hit the golf course with friends or family for a great time.
“Everybody has a great time,” Ennis said. “Half of the people who enter the tournament win some kind of prize. Players know each other and most of the players have been playing here for years. Those kids help us to continue the tournament so we need them to keep coming back so we can keep this thing going.
“There used to be a lot more people come out to compete but now it has dropped from about 120 people a year to just 60-80 people,” Ennis continued, “so if anyone is wanting to give it a shot, fill out an application and come on out this weekend.”
Anyone wanting to join in on the competition can pick up an application from Hole’n Run, online at www.wpgolf.org or by calling tournament director Bob Green at (304)-650-2024.
