Stewart, Bishop Donahue Earn Victory at Crispin
Donahue junior cards 43 to earn medalist
WHEELING — On a sunny 85-degree Monday evening at the Crispin Golf Course at the Oglebay Resort, Bishop Donahue collected a victory in a quadrangular match with a team score of 178, edging out runner-up Union Local’s team score of 185, St. John’s score of 203 and Martins Ferry, which did not qualify for a score because of a lack of players.
Bishop Donahue had five players record a score in the 40s, which helped the Bishops secure a victory.
“We have been playing better every time out,” Bishops coach Tom Kochalka said. “The last couple of matches, almost all of our kids have been shooting in the 40s and that is good. They are still a young team that is continuing to improve.
“B.J. Stewart shot his best round of the year. He is improving just like all of the others every week.”
Stewart was the match medalist for Bishop Donahue, with his season best score of 43 on the par-36 course.
“I just wanted to try to play my best, hit the ball hard and really focus on hitting it straight (Monday),” Stewart said. “My approach out there was to just put the ball as close to the hole as I could from far out to set up my next shot. My second shot was probably my strength (Monday). I put a lot of second shots on the green and on par 5 second shots, I gave myself a lot of birdie chances.”
Stewart is a second-year golfer in his junior year but on Monday, he looked like he had been playing the game all of his life. He finished the first, fifth and ninth holes with a par to help him earn medalist honors.
Stewart’s teammate Dustin Beazel pressured Stewart all day and finished with a 44, followed by Logan Ruckh, who carded a 45, and Emily Nelson and Logan Ingram who each shared a score of 46 for Bishop Donahue. Beazel earned the match’s only birdie on the par 4 first hole when he drained his third shot. Beazel also recorded pars on the fifth and seventh holes. Both were par 3’s.
The Bishops delivered a strong performance on the par-3 fifth hole as Ruckh and Nelson also found the hole in just three shots.
The runner-up Union Local Jets were led by Josh Britton and Derek Smith, who each tallied a 44, with Bryce Gatti turning in a 48 and Audie Hezoucky generating a 49.
Britton secured a par on the par 3 seventh hole and Gatti collected a par on the par 3 fifth hole.
Aaron Rataiczak paced St. John’s with a 44, followed by Cody Hamilton who carded a 49, Nate Schnegg who supplied a 51 and Bryce Ramsay who completed the course with a 59.
Rataiczak completed the fifth hole with a par as well.
