Wheeling Nailers Re-Sign Defenseman Danny Fick

WHEELING — The Wheeling Nailers announced Wednesday they have re-signed defenseman Danny Fick to an ECHL contract.

Fick, 25, played his first season of professional hockey in North America during the 2015-16 campaign, when he was invited to attend Wheeling’s training camp, before ultimately earning a spot on the club’s opening roster. He started to become a regular in the lineup in the middle of November, which was also when Fick notched his first career point — a game-tying assist on the 14th against Evansville.

The Marine on St. Croix, Minn., native netted his first goal in a Nailers uniform Jan. 9, which turned out to be the first of two that month, as he lit the lamp again Jan. 29, opening the scoring in a key victory at Elmira.

Fick finished the regular season with three goals, four assists, and seven points in 53 games, then added five helpers in 26 playoff contests. His plus-6 rating in the first round against Florida was tops on the team.

“Danny Fick had a good rookie season and showed big strides in the playoffs, as his consistency picked up significantly,” Nailers Coach Jeff Christian said. “He is very responsible defensively, is a good team guy, and leads in the room. I am looking forward to helping him be more creative, while joining the rush this season.”

Prior to his time in Wheeling, Fick played one season in Norway for the Manglerud Star Ishockey Team. There, he produced one assist in 24 regular-season games before upping his numbers to five points in six relegation matches.

“I am really excited to be back in Wheeling, and I am looking forward to the start of the season,” Fick said. “We had a great group of guys last year, and hopefully we can continue our winning ways this season. Personally, my game improved as the year went on and I want to continue to improve, picking up where I left off.”

Fick and the Eastern Conference Champion Nailers open the 2015-16 season at home on at 7:05 p.m. on Oct. 15 against the Brampton Beast.
