WELLSBURG — Brooke High avenged a tough loss to Steubenville with a three-game sweep Wednesday night.

The Bruins (9-14), started strong out of the gate and never looked back, cruising to a 25-11, 25-13, 25-19 victory.

“The girls came out confident and played hard,” Bruins coach Lori Jackson said. “We have struggled this year with finishing as most of our losses have come in the deciding game by two points. But tonight, the girls came out on fire and they stayed up throughout the whole match.”

Game one was neck and neck until a Landyn Haynes kill put Brooke up 8-7. Haynes then stepped behind the service line and turned red hot, scoring 13 points including six aces, making it 21-7 before Big Red’s Lynn Meyer used a timeout. A Jaliyah Hubbard kill broke Haynes’ streak, but three Big Red errors and an Adrianna Bailey slam down the line gave the hosts the victory.

“Landyn has been stepping up all season and continues to get better and better,” Jackson noted. “She definitely got to them with her serving tonight.”

Brooke went up 2-1 in game two and service aces by Jenna Cooper, Haynes, and Courtney Elliot pushed the score 10-3. A Haynes kill along with a Cooper tip and ace serve caused Meyer to use a timeout, down 17-9.

Kills by Haynes, Hope Bowman, and Haily Boyce plus a Bailey block increased the Bruins’ lead to 23-11. Bowman and Big Red’s Rhiannon Petrisko exchanged kills before a Boyce slam ended the game.

In game three, Brooke again went up early and led by as many as eight (16-8). Two kills by Petrisko and two Brooke errors made it 18-12. From there, three kills by Boyce doubled with two Big Red errors pushed the score to 23-15. Three Bruins’ errors and another Petrisko slam made it 24-19 but a tip by Cooper closed out the match.

“I’m really disappointed with how our whole team played,” Meyer said. “Rhiannon and Jaliyah are the only ones who showed they cared (Wednesday) and were the only ones who played to represent Big Red nation. We looked like we threw in the towel. We didn’t have much communication or enthusiasm.

“Brooke has a nice team and I think the girls came in underestimating them,” she added.”

Brooke was led by Bowman with 11 kills and 11 blocks; Bailey with four kills and four blocks; Cooper with four digs, 17 assists, 14 points, and six aces; Boyce with six digs, nine kills, and nine points; and Haynes with six digs, 10 kills, three blocks, 24 points, and 11 aces. Courtney Engle added seven blocks; Courtney Elliot had 18 digs and four aces; and Chloe Fox tallied nine assists.

“We made a lineup change tonight and put our best blocker against some of their stronger hitters and I think that worked in our favor,” Jackson said. “This is one of the first games where everyone seemed to be on.”

For Big Red (6-11) Petrisko led the way with eight kills, two digs, and two blocks. Courtney Martin added four assists; Suzie Rosaschi had three kills; Taylor Williams had six assists; Hubbard added two kills; and Sidney Snyder posted two kills.

“We had two good days of practice, so I’m not really sure what happened,” Meyer added. “Hopefully, we can come out and play strong tomorrow.”

Both teams are back in action today at the Bruins host University and Big Red travels to participate in a tri-match against Oak Glen and Tyler Consolidated.
