GLEN DALE — The season centered around teammwork continued on Monday for the John Marshall volleyball team as it narrowly defeated visiting Monroe Central in five sets by scores of 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 21-25 and 15-12.

Some teams would falter after dropping the opening set of the match or even falling down 3-0 in the fifth set but not the Monarchs. They rallied together and posted another comeback that Monarchs’ coach Chelsea Linsky credits to the teammwork that her girls play with.

“We started out kind of down and they were not being their typical selves,” she said after losing the first set. “We had to work to come back and teammwork is what gets us these wins.

“They all play great when we are in it together and when we do that we can always come out on top. If we start off bad and don’t get back up, that is when we struggle.”

Monroe Central was led to victory in the first set by Samantha Knuchel who reeled off a five-point run for the Seminoles to give her squad a 19-10 advantage and they never looked back, going up 1-0 in the match. Lydia Knutsen sparked the Monarchs with a four-point run of her own.

Shyla Schneider put the ‘Noles up 4-2 in the second set with four straight points from behind the stripe before the hosts delivered their first comeback as Lauren Garcia supplied six consecutive points to give John Marshall a 9-4 edge. The Monarchs never relinquished the lead and took the second set to even the match.

John Marshall’s Isabelle Harr turned in five straight points in the third set to give the Monarchs a 12-5 and Maddy Mayle finished off the win with a monstous kill on a pass from Garcia to put her team up 2-1.

The Monarchs looked to close out the match in the fourth set as they took a 16-14 advantage after four consecutive points from Megan Denning erased a three-point deficit but this time it was the Seminoles who rallied to secure the win and force a tie-breaker.

Schneider served Monroe Central to an early 3-0 lead in the deciding set, until Garcia began to serve for the hosts. She ripped off six unanswered points for the Monarchs as her teammates and fans erupted with each point. The Seminoles began to close the gap but Maddy Linzy earned a kill to set up a match point for John Marshall and Monroe Central could not keep the ball in bounds, giving John Marshall the match.

“Monroe Central is a really good team,” Linsky said. “They get the ball over the net and nothing drops. Their defense is really good.”

The ‘Noles were led by Schneider’s 14 points, while Allison Kuhn accounted for 12 points, nine kills and 10 assists, Knuchel recorded 11 points, 12 assists and 32 digs and Marlee Miller added 11 kills.

“It was a good match,” Monroe coach Troy Baker said. “Both teams went back and forth but it seemed like they had one or two servers that gave us trouble and they got the lead in the last set and we couldn’t come back. It was a tough loss.”

For the victors, it was Mayle leading the charge with 12 kills and four digs, while Harr garnered 11 kills and five digs, Linzy gathered nine kills, Denning generated 15 digs, Garcia dished out 39 assists and Knutsen added nine digs in the win.

“Denning and Knutsen had some amazing passes,” Linsky said. “They are a passing machine and I couldn’t ask for more from them. Mayle also came in pretty strong for us today with quite a few kills.

“These girls are excepting the roles that I give them and that is what is helping us come out on top.”
