Linsly Beats Down Beallsville 44-6 in Mercy-Rule Contest
BEALLSVILLE — Linsly School has battled through a meat-grinder of a schedule in its first four games.
Coach B.J. Depew’s Cadets got some relief Friday night as they made the long and winding trip to Beallsville a successful one, trouncing the manpower-strapped Blue Devils by a 44-6 count in a mercy-rule contest.
Linsly, playing minus the services of injured quarterback Luke Mueller and two-way standout Jacob “Butter” Murray, improved to 2-3. Another rugged test surfaces Friday as the Cadets visit city-rival Wheeling Central.
The building process continues for second-year coach Larry Deem and Beallsville.
The Blue Devils suited up 13 players and ended with only 11 in falling to 0-5, also against a most formidable schedule. They play host to Lutheran East Friday in a Homecoming affair.
“It was nice that we got playing time for our younger kids. It did take us a possession or two to wake up and realize that we had to make plays,” Depew said. “We weren’t able to work on a lot of things since it was such an abbreviated contest. But we did learn a few things.
“The nice thing is we got out of this game injury-free. It’s been tough the last two games losing people. I congratulate Beallsville for the courage and toughness they showed. They lost a couple of kids with injuries but they never quit. I commend them and their coaches.”
Linsly struck early and often. The Cadets led 19-0 after one quarter and bumped their advantage to 44-0 at haltime. Depew substituted freely from the second quarter on and his starters did not see action in the second half.
“That is a class bunch,” Deem said. “Coach Depew and his staff handled the situation with a lot of class. We are still going through growing pains.
“We did do some better things in the second half. We will take stock of our injuries and get back to work.”
Linsly scored on its first snap as sophomore quarterback Wyatt Hirt teamed with senior ace Gage Giovengo on a 39-yard scoring connection.
The Cadets also found paydirt on their second possession as freshman Trevin Tush weaved his way through the Blue Devils defense on a nifty 40-yard TD gallop.
The Linsly defense provided the next touchdown as senior standout Tommy Curtin intercepted a Beallsville pass and brought it back 38 yards to paydirt.
Linsly tallied four more touchdowns in the second quarter.
Hirt connected with sophomore Jules Giovengo on a 30-yard scoring pass with 11:30 showing in the second quarter. That was followed by Nick Falbo’s 15-yard scoring burst.
The Cadets’ final two scores come on runs by Raoul Lockhart (3 yards) and Bakari Adderly (37 yards).
Beallsville broke into the scoring column courtesy of a 15-yard TD pass from freshman quarterback Dakota Phillips to classmate James Schnegg with 5:28 left in the third. The conversion pass failed.
Linsly utilized seven ball-carriers and Adderly topped the list with 47 yards on two attempts. Hirt completed 4 of 5 passes for 114 yards.
Due to a slew of quarterback sacks, Beallsville finished with negative-11 yards in rushing. Phillips completed 8 of 26 passes for 101 yards.
