WHEELING — With the cool fall weather setting in, things remained heated on the pitch during Tuesday’s match between Weir and Linsly but the Cadets were able to overcome the chippiness of the match and walk away with a 2-1 victory on their home field.

Weir (10-3) is coming off an OVAC 4-A title but the scrappy Cadets (8-7) did not shy away from the challenge and the competitive nature of both teams made for a match that came down to the final second.

“This was a great matchup,” Linsly coach Eric Fries said. “Sometimes the excitement of winning an OVAC championship can make it hard for a team to get amped up for a regular season match but Weir has a lot of good kids and they were able to make a lot of opportunities happen but they just didn’t capitalize and we did.”

The two teams exchanged shots in the first half but they all came away empty handed until the 33:03 mark, when Manuel Suita gave Linsly a 1-0 lead on an indirect free kick with an assist coming from Mitchell Marhefka to give the hosts the momentum going into the half.

“Our first half goal really helped us,” Fries said. “Suita has great skills and it is hard to get the ball away from him. He handles the pressure from the defense well and that can frustrate a defense. When he got fouled tonight, it gave us opportunities and slowed the game down, which was in our favor.”

William Rice opened second half play with a great shot for the Red Riders but Linsly’s goalkeeper, Chaz Gaphrey made a leaping grab to rob him of a goal to keep Weir scoreless.

Moments later, Weir’s Zach Hannah delivered another impressive shot in Gaphrey’s direction and this time he made a diving stop to get the Cadet fans on their feet and give his Linsly teammates some motivation on offense.

Just about six minutes later, Suita lined up for a direct free kick and once again beat the goalie for his second goal of the evening to extend the Linsly lead to 2-0 at the 20:56 mark.

The Red Riders continued to put shots on goal in the second half but just couldn’t find the back of the net until the 27:30 mark when Ryan Bodrog beat Gaphrey on an unassisted goal to put the visitors on the board.

As the Riders tried to tie the match late in the action, things became heated between the two teams but it was put to rest and the Cadets held on to notch a hard fought victory.

“We constantly work on trying to keep cool heads out there,” Fries said. “Sometimes it can be hard with high school athletes competing and the emotions of the game.

“For the guys we have, we have improved greatly and worked tremendously hard as the season has progressed and this is their reward. We beat a good team on a day, in which it could have went either way. We are walking away with a positive attitude and feeling good about ourselves.”

Weir accumulated nine shots on goal and Gaphrey collected eight saves for Linsly, while the Cadets tallied three shots on goal and Riders’ goalkeeper Luck Tenagilo gathered one save.

“We weren’t passing the ball very well in the first half,” Weir coach Jim Luevano said. “We had opportunities here and there but just couldn’t find the back of the net. In the second half, we controlled the game but still couldn’t score and that is what it comes down to.”
