Fairmont Senior Eliminates Weir Girls in Regional Final

FAIRMONT — The Weir girls’ soccer team had a tough end to its season.

Fairmont Senior scored five times in the second half for a 5-0 victory against the Red Riders Tuesday at East-West Stadium in the West Virginia Class AA-A Region 1 championship.

“(Fairmont Senior) played really good soccer,” first-year Weir coach Joe Jimboy said. “They did everything well. They played a fantastic game. They moved the ball well. They had a good game plan. Their effort was unbelievable.

“They are a well-coached team. They did all the right things right. They got what they deserved.

“They capitalized on every mistake we made. I don’t think the final score is any indication of how close the game was.”

The Red Riders finished 13-6-4. They came into the contest 11-1-1 in their last 13 games.

“We got hot at the right time, that’s for sure,” Jimboy said. “We just couldn’t put the last stamp on it.”

Weir’s last loss was a 4-1 decision to University Sept. 27. Before that, it was to Parkersburg South, 7-1, on Sept. 9.

“I think it was us buying into each other,” Jimboy said of the 13-game streak after a 2-4-3 start. “Sometimes it takes groups a little while to gel. We eventually found a way to gel and come together.

“Some people might rule this as we fell short. But, we had a really good season. We did a lot of good things this year.”

Hannah Floyd scored at the 35:39 mark of the second half and Carlie Holstein made it 2-0 11:03 later. Both are sophomores.

Senior Savanna Shriver made it 3-0 at the 12:37 mark and the floodgates opened as the Polar Bears scored with 6:47 and 1:23 left in the game.

“After halftime (0-0) we tried to put more speed up top, but they maintained the midfield better than we did,” Jimboy said. “They marked (Fran) Farran well.

“They made adjustments just like we did. But, their adjustments came in the middle of the field.”
