Ferry Blanks Beaver, 47-0

MARTINS FERRY — Dave Bruney knew it wouldn’t take long to figure out if his team was fully engaged Friday night.

It took all of eight plays and 2:29 off the game clock. The eighth play of the opening drive was a Dalton Hoover 2-yard touchdown plunge, which capped an impressive 67-yard drive.

Ferry never looked back from that point on, coasting to a 47-0 victory against invading Beaver Local at a chilly and soggy Dave Bruney Football Complex.

“Our kids played about as well as I think we could have,” Bruney said. “I don’t think Beaver ever stopped us. We stopped ourselves a few times.”

The Purple Riders (6-3) still have faint hopes for a possible Division V, Region 19 playoff berth and are in the thick of the OVAC Class 3A title chase. They’ll close out the regular season next Friday against arch-rival Bellaire.

“When we’re engaged, we’re pretty good and whatever it takes to get us to that point we’ll do,” Bruney said. “We had a pretty tough Tuesday and Wednesday practice because I told the kids we’re not going to watch that stuff again. Our guys were engaged and did a great job on both sides of the ball.”

The Riders have won two straight via the shutout after being blanked themselves by Indian Creek on Oct. 7. In those games, the Riders have scored 116 points.

“We got better last week, regardless of who we played,” Bruney said. “I could put a blodder over Carrick because if we played with that type of energy against some other opponents we would have won those games.”

It didn’t take Beaver Local coach Jeremy McElroy many words or too long to summarize where the Purple Riders flexed their muscle.

“They won the line of scrimmage and we turned the ball over and those are two big factors for success,” McElroy said. “They just controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.”

They sure did, coach.

The Purple Riders limited Beaver Local’s offense, which was without the services of Michael Clendenning because of injury, to 115 yards of offense and six first downs. More than 60 of those yards came in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Ferry finished with 425 yards, including an impressive 283-yard effort on the ground. Ferry spread the wealth in the running game, too. Junior Jacob Johnson led the way with 88 yards on just eight carries. He scored the second Purple touchdown of the game on a 25-yard burst in the middle of the first quarter.

Hoover, who got things going, finished with 76 yards and opened the second-quarter scoring with a 4-yard burst to the end zone. Ty Allen added 78 yards on 14 carries and scored on a 2-yard run to make it 27-0 in the second quarter.

In the second half, the Riders showed the passing game, which has been basically non-existent all season, off to a tune of two touchdown passes. Freshman quarterback Jacob Probst, who is gaining more and more confidence each week, found senior Jack Davis, who made a couple of nifty moves in open field for a 68-yard touchdown.

After senior Zac Selby picked off his second pass in as many Beaver Local plays, Probst found junior Cory Bennett up the sideline for a 69 yard pitch and catch.

“A lot of those kids who played well for us offensively are back next year,” Bruney pointed out.

The Riders capped the scoring on a 2-yard run by freshman Caleb Olson. Cody Olson kicked three PATs.

Along with his offensive exploits, Davis was a terror once again from his end spot. He was consistently in the Beavers backfield.
