Wheeling Park Boys, Girls Punch Ticket to State Cross Country Meet

Saunders, Ayers lead the way for Patriots

Wheeling Park’s Beighley Ayers approaches the finish line during the regional meet Thursday.

WHEELING — For the first time since 1999, the Wheeling Park girls cross country team has earned a spot in the state cross country meet.

The team will travel to the state meet in Ona, W.Va., alongside Park’s boys team, which earned its first spot in the state meet since 2008. Both teams finished third in Thursday’s Region I Class AAA Cross Country Championship at Wheeling Park High School.

“I am incredibly proud of both teams,” Patriots coach Jacob Galik said. “I have been the coach of Park for five years, and we have had some great kids come through but we have not had a team make it to state. To take both teams to state in the same year is incredibly gratifying. This is what we worked for and the joy on their faces when it was announced makes all the work and sacrifices worthwhile.”

Along with both teams qualifying for state, Ronnie Saunders, Corbin Rutan, Beighley Ayers and Isabella DiSaia turned in top-10 individual finishes for Park to earn a trip to to the state meet, set for Oct. 29.

Saunders paced the boys team with a sixth-place finish in a time of 17:37 and Rutan finished 10th with a mark of 17:48, while Ayers sparked the girls by finishing third overall at 20:16 while DiSaia turned in a ninth-place finish in 21:00.

“Corbin (Rutan) was clearly not feeling great (Thursday) but Ronnie stepped up for us so that is good,” Galik said. “I couldn’t be happier with how Beighley and Isabella ran but really it was our No. 3, 4 and 5 girls who stepped up. Nicole Ridgely did a great job and Kerrigan Wagner and Melina McCabe really came through for us. We squeaked by Preston and every spot mattered in this race.”

Ridgely (23:11) finished 20th, Wagner (24:12) placed 24th and McCabe (24:32) earned the 25th spot for the Patriots. The girls outpaced Preston by 11 points.

The Park boys had top 25 finishes from William Sellers (18:22) who placed 15th, Zack Klimas (18:36) who was 18th, Jared Ullom (18:43) who grabbed the 20th spot, Jarred Beihl (18:57) who turned in a 21st place finish and C.J. Powell (19:30) who was 25th. Park’s boys also beat Preston by 11 points for third overall.
