WHEELING — Josie Daugherty was lights out for Wheeling Park as she supplied seven 3-pointers and 32 points, but the sharp-shooting Patriots of Parkersburg South rode away with a narrow 77-73 road victory at Wheeling Park High School on Saturday afternoon.

Parkersburg South (4-0) rarely missed from the free-throw line, connecting on 22 of 26 foul shots, including all eight attempts down the stretch in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice.

“That team can shoot,” Park coach Ryan Young said. “When you are in a tight game with a team like that, as well as they shoot from the free-throw line, its pretty tough because they just don’t miss.

“They are a well-coached, good team that just beat the No. 1 team in the state on Thursday. That tells us that we are right there with the rest of them but we just have to translate them into wins.”

South trailed 11-0 to start the game and fell behind 44-35 early in the third, only to rally both times to earn the road victory.

“We were down 13 points to Huntington and battled back,” South coach Ed Davis said. “It’s the personality they are developing. How hard they play is how hard they practice and that is a coach’s dream.

“It just comes down to the simple things. We have done a good job of (free-throws) early in the season because they concentrate in practice.”

The game was tied four different times in the fourth quarter. The last tie came with 1:33 to go, with the scored deadlocked at 69-69. That is when Parkersburg South secured the lead for good as Devin Hefner was fouled and drained a pair of free-throws from the free-throw line to put Parkersburg South on top 71-69.

Parkersburg forced a turnover and then was able to run time off the clock before Hefner hit a mid-range jumper to extend the lead to 73-69 with less than a minute to go.

After Park recorded 1 of 2 from the line, Parkersburg South collected two more free throws by Hefner. Park received a 3-pointer from Daugherty, which banked in to make it a 75-73 game in favor of Parkersburg South. However, Kenzie Johnson strolled to the foul line for South and sealed a victory with a pair of shots.

Wheeling Park started the game on an 11-0 run, only to see Parkersburg South respond with a 19-2 run to end the first quarter.

In the second quarter, following a pair of 3-pointers by Daugherty tied the game at 19-19, Parkersburg South reeled off 10 points in a row to retake the lead at 29-19.

Park continued to battle until it trailed 35-32 with 1:30 until the half. In that time span, Park scored 10 consecutive points to take a 42-35 advantage into the break.

Daugherty had 24 points at halftime, while Emily Pavlic tallied 11 and Alexis Moore delivered 13 at the half.

“It was definitely a game of runs,” Young said. “Both teams shot the ball extremely well. Josie (Daugherty) and Emily (Pavlic) stepped up and played a helluva game.”

Wheeling Park drained 12 3-pointers and Parkersburg South knocked down nine.

“Young and his team are coming up and shooting the ball really well,” Davis said. “Park does a great job and they will be a force to be reckoned with coming out of this region.”

Pavlic followed Daugherty’s solid game with 19 points.

Hefner paced Parkersburg South with 25 and Moore added 21 in the win.

“We just played Morgantown and Parkersburg South,” Young said. “Those are two teams that have been there and done that. While a 1-3 record is not glamorous, we have gotten more out of those two games that we would have playing two teams that aren’t any good.”
