Union Local Girls Defeat Magnolia

MORRISTOWN — Three games into the season, Union Local coach Kelley Hanlon believes her team “is still building” into what it can and will be down the road. The foundation will certainly pass inspection thanks to point guard Haley Porter.

The talented junior made her presence felt Monday night inside ‘The Hangar’ as she led the Jets to a 78-67 victory against Magnolia (0-2).

Porter did a little bit of everything, but it was in the scoring column where she did the brunt of her damage. Taking that a step farther, she did the bulk of her scoring in the first half by scoring 29 of her game-high 37 points.

En route to her total, Porter knocked seven 3-pointers, including one just before the horn at the end of the first and second quarters.

The latter was a high bank from well beyond NBA range.

“She was just hot in the first half,” Hanlon said.

That effort allowed the Jets (2-1) to build a commanding 50-31 edge at the half. It was a hole that was too deep for the Blue Eagles to fly out of.

Veteran coach Tom Tisher, who is in his second season at the Magnolia helm, has been around long enough to know that when a player drops nearly 30 in a half, it’s going to be a tough night.

“What can you say? Porter played very well,” Tisher said. “Whenever someone scores 30 points in a half, what are you going to do? We didn’t let her score. She earned those points.”

Tisher gave praise to his assistant coach, Phil Hulsey, who made a defensive adjustment at halftime. While shifting to a ‘junk’ defense on Porter, the Blue Eagles forced other Jets to get involved. Porter didn’t record a field goal in the second half and didn’t point in the third quarter.

“I would have put someone on her, too,” Hanlon said of the Blue Eagles’ defensive change. “Once she got past that (defense), it led to some easy shots underneath because we had people open.”

That change in plans allowed the Blue Eagles to score the first 10 points of the third, but UL, which didn’t record its first point of the second half until there was less than four minutes to go in the third, still owned a 59-47 edge at the final break.

“We told the girls at halftime that Magnolia was going to come out fighting and probably be in a box-and-1 on Haley after she scored those kind of points in the first half,” Hanlon said. “We’ve worked a lot on box-and-1 in practice, but somehow they forgot what we were doing even after all that. I didn’t think our defense was near what it was in the first half and we weren’t boxing out or rebounding. But, we pulled it out.”

The Blue Eagles continued their comeback in the opening few minutes of the fourth. Seven straight points from senior Jordan DeLaney allowed Magnolia to get within seven at 63-56 with 5:20 to play. However, Porter calmly sank two at the line to stop UL’s bleeding and Magnolia got only as close as eight on three different occassions the remainder of the game.

“If we could have gotten to five or even closer, I think they might have tightened a little bit more, but it didn’t happen,” Tisher said. “That’s a plus for them. Union Local did what it’s supposed to do, so give them credit. We got better and there’s still a long season to go. This isn’t my first rodeo and all you can do is come to practice (Tuesday), work as hard as you can and get ready for the next game.”

While her scoring is what stands out, Porter stuffed the stat sheet. She just missed a triple-double with nine rebounds and eight assists. For good measure, she blocked two shots. Porter’s effort was complemented by senior center Kaitlyn Clark-Patterson, who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Alison Loase contributed 12 points off the bench. Sophomore Emily Robb scored only five points, but she had a conventional three-point play in the latter stages of the third that was a big swing.

DeLaney’s production, meanwhile, was backed by Kyndra Pilant’s 16 points and 16 rebounds. Taylor Ludewig had 14 points, while Kelsi Chapman finished with 10.
