Patriots Rally for Victory Against Park Girls

PARKERSBURG — Devin Hefner exploded for 27 points, including 17 in the second half, and Parkersburg South (13-4) completed a second-half comeback to win 62-56 against Wheeling Park on Friday night inside the Rod Oldham Athletic Center.

Freshman Makenna Winans sparked the comeback with three blocks on the same Wheeling Park possession to fire the home Patriots up defensively right before halftime. South head Ed Davis and company came out hungry in the second half and turned a five-point deficit into a one-point advantage by the end of the third quarter.

Winans didn’t score on the night but the defensive effort was an important piece to South to close out a victory. PSHS allowed just 12 points in the period after halftime. Swiping away WPHS passes aided the effort. South created six Park turnovers in the third after the visiting Patriots gave the ball away just five times in the opening 16 minutes.

Both Hefner and Johnson drained back-to-back 3-pointers in the third period to give South its first lead, 41-39, with 1:43 left. Junior Hefner finished with 11 of the Patriots’ 18 points in the stanza. Johnson finished alongside her teammate with a double-digit scoring effort.

The senior tallied 17 points, which included a pair of 3-pointers.

The scoreboard read 43-42 for the home team after three quarters of play.

However, the Patriots’ visitors didn’t go away. Emma Kendle scored a quick basket to give the visitors a 44-43 lead. Emily Pavlic then hit a shot from behind the arc to put the advantage up to four. Johnson sliced the home deficit to one point after a drive down the lane and one with 5:54 left to play. Hefner nailed a frenzy-inducing 3 at the 4:33 mark to put South ahead for good, 52-50.

After South grabbed the lead, it finished the game on a 10-6 run to finish off the visiting Patriots (8-4).

The evening couldn’t have started better for Park. Guard Lauren Shultz and the center Kendle combined to help the visiting team take a 19-12 lead after one period of play. Shultz scored four and Kendle had six in the opening stanza. Their hosts managed to bite into the lead in the second quarter but only by two for a 30-25 Park halftime lead.

Both WPHS players finished with a team-high 10 points for Coach Ryan Young.

“The kids showed a lot of heart and effort in the second half, we got some stops finally in the final half,” said Davis. “Park shot 60 percent in the first half and attacked the basket well and we didn’t defend it well. The second half we did a lot better of recognizing what they were trying to do. We told the kids that it was a win over a top 10 team no matter what the polls said.”
