Bishop Donahue Wins Final Battle Vs. Cameron Dragons

CAMERON — A common occurrence for the Bishop Donahue boys’ team this season is building up a comfortable double-digit lead, only to see it slip away in the second half to single digits.

In those games, however, the Bishops were able to make enough plays down the stretch to get the win. Tuesday night was yet another game like that, this time against Cameron.

The Bishops led by as many as 20 in the first half before the Dragons came out of the locker rooms with a fire in their eyes and cut the lead to three. But the Bishops were able to hold on and get a victory in an instant classic in the Marshall County rivalry, 69-64, which could be the very last matchup between the two teams.

“I wish I had a great answer for it,” Bishop Donahue coach Tom Wise said about his teams squandering leads. “But I don’t. The Trinity game we did it and this game we did it. It’s something that we are going to have to address seriously in the next couple of days. There’s no reason for it.”

The Bishops went on a 13-0 run in the first quarter to gain their first double-digit lead. They went on another 10-0 spurt to go up 27-7 with 5:51 left in the second.

A Taylor Straughn bucket before the half gave Bishop Donahue a 39-25 lead at halftime.

Trey Routt came out of the locker room determined to get his team back in the game. The senior scored the first eight points of the half to put the score at 39-33. During that span, Routt stole the ball from the Bishops’ end and saw nobody on the other side and went up and slammed the ball through the rim that got the crowd rocking.

“Trey is a tremendous player and he’s a leader on the floor,” Cameron coach Tom Hart said. “We told him that we’re on the verge of letting this game get away from us. We didn’t play very good defense and we were playing soft on offense. We were looking for somebody else to take the shots. In the third quarter, we stepped it up a little bit and played better defense. We started working our offense a little better. We shot like 70 percent in the third quarter. But we dug such a deep hole, it’s a tough loss.”

With 2:59 left in the third, Logan Ruckh hit a big 3-pointer for the Bishops to put the lead back to 10, 44-34. However, the Dragons scored nine of the last 11 points of the quarter to get within three, 46-43. Travis Mickey hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to make it a one-possession game.

It was a back-and-fourth contest for the first four minutes of the final quarter. Up by six, Straughn hit his biggest shot of the night as he drained a contested 3-pointer to give his team some breathing room, 55-46. Trey Scott responded with a long ball of his own.

The Bishops, however were able to pull away and led by as many as 11 down the stretch. Straughn secured a team-high 20 points while Koltin Kleeh had 12. Anthony Robbins was solid with 10 points. Trey Miller and Junior Holmes just missed out on double figures as they scored nine and eight points respectively.

” I’m really happy about it,” Wise said about getting the win. “Our most likely last regular season game ever against our big county rival on their place. I’ll take this result any day of the week.”

For the Dragons, Routt had a stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high 28 points, Scott netted 11 and Hunter Aston tallied 10.
