River Girls Takes Down Beallsville in Sectional Tournament

HANNIBAL — After stumbling out of the gate against Beallsville on Thursday night, River turned to its leading scorer to get back on track.

“They outhustled us,” Pilots coach Rick Isaly said, describing the opening moments of his team’s Ohio Division IV girls’ basketball sectional semifinal tilt against the Blue Devils.

“We were giving up easy baskets, we had them in the 1-and-1 … and then Lauren got started.”

Lauren is Lauren Flannery. The sophomore poured in a game-high 24 points, including 14 in a decisive second-quarter that helped propel River to a 67-44 victory.

The Pilots (11-12) will travel to Malvern on Saturday night with a sectional championship at stake. Tip is at 7. The Hornets disposed of Caldwell, 80-37, in their sectional semi.

“I told them team that our next game will be a lot different,” Isaly said, referring to Malvern, the program that’s ousted River from the postseason the last two years.

“They have a nice post player and two good guards. We’re kind of familiar with them.”

Flannery is quite nifty handling the ball herself. And during the second quarter Thursday night, she, along with Liv Rose off the bench, teammed up to erase a three-point deficit and put River up 15 — 36-21 at halftime.

“We started pressing and they turned the ball over a few times and we started making some baskets,” Isaly said.

Flannery scored the final six points of an 8-0 run that put the Pilots on top 20-12.

After Talitha Bedford made one of two free throws, River went on another run, this time a 7-0 one, keyed by four points from Rose, who finished with 15 points.

Bailey Caldwell scored off an offensive rebound making the score 29-18, then Flannery popped in the next five points before Rose capped the half off with a basket.

“That’s been our whole season, really,” Beallsville coach Tori Jarrett said. “We have moments when we’ll play really well, then we’ll breakdown and not play really well. Those mental breakdowns result in about six or eight points.”

The up-and-down flow of the game continued in the second half as River built its largest lead — 21. The Blue Devils (12-11) rallied, though, scoring 10 straight points making the score 42-31 with 3:36 left in the third.

Ashlie Louden scored four of her team-best 15 points during the spurt, with Olivia Muncy, who finished with 11, also scoring four.

Beallsville got to within nine late in the third, but River went on a 12-2 run to start the fourth quarter to go up 20 and put the game away.
