Wheeling Nailers’ Kwas Puts Suspension Behind

WHEELING — Hockey is an emotional game. Sometimes, even if unintended, players step over that imaginary line.

Wheeling forward Jordan Kwas did just that following Reading’s overtime goal Feb. 4 at WesBanco Arena.

“We got scored on in overtime and honestly I am frustrated,” Kwas said. “I just turned around and I shot the puck.

“I just meant to send it down the ice and sure enough I saw it go over the glass.”

The puck not only flew into the stands, but it hit a fan. She was attended to by personnel as Kwas skated over to the area where it happened.

“I knew that was a game misconduct, but I was just worried it would hit someone,” Kwas said. “Sure enough … and I am lucky it only hit her in the shoulder.”

The affected patron was not seriously injured, so the actual damage ended up being done to the Nailers. Already searching for bodies of injuries throughout the organization, Wheeling was forced to skate shorthanded for the next four games as the league handed down a suspension.

“I wish it would never have happened,” Kwas said. “I had to treat it like it was a little bit of a blessing to get a break midseason.

“That’s the way you have to look at it, but at the same I wish I could have been there the last couple games with the boys and I wish it never would have happened.”

Kwas returned to the team on Friday night and scored a pair of goals, his 18th and 19th of the season, in a 6-3 loss to Brampton. But he says it was a lesson learned and it won’t happen again.

“Obviously I regret doing that,” Kwas said.

“That’s not the kind of player I am and I think anyone in the league would probably know that if they did a little research on it.

“I am sorry about it.”

Kwas and the Nailers are back in action at 2 today on the road against Brampton.
