Madonna Softball Team No-Hits Cameron

Gasvoda strikes out six in Dons victory

WEIRTON — The Madonna softball team made quick work of Cameron.

The Blue Dons scored three runs in the first and nine more in the second, and junior standout pitcher Katie Gasvoda hurled a no-hitter en route to a 12-1 victory over the Dragons on Tuesday evening at Starvaggi Park.

“It was a good day,” Madonna (1-0) coach Chris Conti said. “I am very proud of the girls and how we played. We have a lot of girls out of position this year, and the girls responded. That is the word I am going to use. They responded very well.

“We played well in all phases of the game. We played well in the field. We made contact with the ball which I was very pleased to see. Katie pitched an excellent game. She pitched very well. When she pitches like that and we put the ball in play, we are going to win a lot of games.

“We played a very-good game. We ran the bases well. We did well overall. For this being our first time outside on the dirt, we did an excellent job.”

Though the girls from Marshall County faced one of the best pitchers in the state, Cameron was also hurt by walks and errors. The Dragons issued seven free passes and committed four errors.

“It is not what they are doing to us, it is what we are doing to ourselves,” Cameron (0-2) head coach Albert Paczewski said. “You cannot walk that many. In that one inning, we had four or five walks. We had some errors. We are killing ourselves.”

Gasvoda struck out six, while walking one en route to picking up the victory.

“This was the first time Katie pitched outside in the dirt,” Conti said. “It took her a couple of innings to get used to it. Once she relaxed, she was the Katie we all know her to be.”

Gasvoda’s lone blemish was a leadoff walk to Cameron starting pitcher Julia Yocum. Yocum ended up scoring the first run of the game on a Gasvoda wild pitch.

Madonna collected six hits, one of which went for extra bases.

Individually, Sophia Rocrosio recorded a single and a two-run triple, Keara Kush contributed a run-scoring double and Jaedyn Kush and Karli Sutton each tallied a single and two RBI. Also, Gianna Mascio singled home a run, and Kasey Canei and Gia Riccadonna each delivered an RBI.

Yocum took the loss for the visitors. She struck out one, while walking six in one inning of work inside of the circle. Breanna Pekula relieved Yocum during the second inning. Pekula produced two strikeouts and one walk in one inning of work.

Cameron scored in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead, but the hosts responded by tallying three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

First, Sutton picked up an RBI when she drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the score at 1. Next, Canei ended up with an RBI when she knocked in a run on a fielders’ choice to give the victors the lead for good at 2-1. Finally, Mascio singled home a run to make the score 3-1.

Madonna broke the game open in the second inning by scoring nine runs.

“Today was a big win for us,” Conti said. “Anytime you can win your first game it is great. This gives the girls confidence. The girls needed confidence, and this gives them a confidence boost. Tonight’s game gives them confidence.”

“We have to play better in the field,” Paczewski said. “Our goal is to compete no matter who we play. When you don’t play well in the field, when your pitchers walk batters and you make errors, you are not going to compete. It is not what they are doing to us. It is what we are doing to ourselves. We are taking ourselves out of these games.”
