Wheeling Park Baseball Downs Brooke

Big fifth inning keys 8-3 victory

Wheeling Park’s Jacob Shia fields a grounder against Brooke on Wednesday at Wheeling Park.

WHEELING — The Wheeling Park and Brooke rivalry has been around for many years.

On Wednesday, the Bruins and the Patriots kept that tradition alive as two rather young teams went went toe-to-toe for four innings. Wheeling Park broke a 3-3 tie as it scored five runs in the fifth inning en route to a 8-3 victory over Brooke.

“Anytime you play Brooke it’s going to be a battle,” Patriots coach Mike McLeod said. “It was 3-3 and (Justin) Pennybacker threw really well and kept us off balance. We started to time him up a little bit and got some crucial hits. And you know we’re starting to hit our stride. We got eight games in and it’s the middle of the season with the rain and everything. We just keep grinding. We’re trying to get better.”

After Nick Leonard tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth with a RBI single, Wheeling Park opened the flood gates. Jacob Shia started the inning with a single, followed by a Jarrett Delbrugge walk. Brock Archer, who had a RBI double in the third, put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. An intentional walk to Ross Salvatori loaded the bases.

Sophomore Ben Taylor then crushed a double that scored two runs to put the score at 5-3. Jared Jones was walked to load the bases. Then the Patriots scored a run in bizarre fashion as Salvatori trotted off third toward home during the walk and was caught in a rundown. He eventually made it to home safely to put the score at 6-3.

Ryan Hummel brought home the final runs of the inning as he plated two on a single.

“We hit the ball kind of hard and put the ball in play,” McLeod said. “In high school, when you put the ball on the ground, you never know what could happen. Pitching is going to keep us in there. If we can put the balls in play and put pressure on defense, we’re going to be OK.”

The Bruins got on the scoreboard first as Pennybacker crushed a pitch that went over the left-field wall. Zac Sacripanti then tallied a run-scoring single in the third to put the score at 2-0. Sacripanti had three singles on the day for the Bruins while Nick Leonard secured a single and RBI. On the mound, Pennybacker struck out four.

“We were right there with them,” Brooke coach Ron Ujcich Jr. said. “Like we told the kids, a few mental blunders. And we’re still in the game. When it’s 8-3 late in the game, with a young, inexperienced crew like us, it’s tough mentally. A couple of blunders cost us and other than that, who knows what happens.”

Salvatori also had a RBI single for the Patriots.
