WHEELING — The pitter-patter of little feet turned into thunder on Water Street as youngsters participated in the Ogden Tiny Tot Trot — the cutest of all the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic events held Saturday in Wheeling.

Wheeling residents Susan and Matt Koval brought their 3-year-old daughter Lydia to run the Tot Trot. Matt has worked as an amateur radio operator for years during the race.

“She always goes wherever he goes,” Susan Koval said of Lydia. “She said this morning that she wants to win.”

The Shay brothers, Nate, 5, Wyatt, 4, and Barrett, 3, attended the race with their parents, Stephen and Sarah Shay of Wheeling. Wyatt and Nate were gearing up for the Tot Trot while Barrett was planning to watch from the sidelines.

“It’s a good thing for the kids,” Stephen said.

Melanie and Justin Trabert of Wheeling brought their children, Sophia, 3, Emma, 2, and Easton, 1. Sophia had run the race the past two years.

“We like all the activities that come with it,” Melanie said of the Good Zoo animals, clown and balloon artist, Smart Centre and more that were available on Water Street for families to enjoy.

The Tot Trot was preceded by the Ogden Fun Run, another non-competitive race for children 12 years old and younger. Micah Kramer, 10, was the first to finish the Ogden Fun Run. He is the son of Kristina and John Kramer of Wheeling. He has been running in the races for several years, starting out as a Tot Trotter and moving his way up.

“It was pretty fun. I wish there were more kids my age,” Micah said. “It’s definitely my favorite sport. My dad’s a good runner.”

Siblings Lucas McCamic, 5, and Sadie McCamic, 6, were participating in the Fun Run while their mother, Melissa McCamic, was running in the Half Marathon.

“I like to run because it gives you energy. I like to run because it’s exercise,” Lucas McCamic said before the race.

“I just like to run,” Sadie McCamic added.

They were accompanied to the start line by their mother’s co-worker and friend, Denise O’Brien. She and Melissa McCamic both are yoga instructors.

“I’m so proud of her. She’s a single mother and is in nursing school at West Liberty,” O’Brien said of her friend. O’Brien added her son, Michael O’Brien, also was running in the Half Marathon and had lost 100 pounds due to his running efforts.
