Stickles Out as Edison Football Coach

RICHMOND — News broke Friday that Edison football coach Derrick Stickles resigned from his position, and boys’ basketball coach Nate Moses would be taking over on an interim basis.

“Coach Stickles resigned prior to the school board meeting (Thursday) and the board accepted his resignation,” Edison athletics director JoAnn Stagani said. “He was replaced with Nate Moses.”

Under Stickles, an Oak Glen graduate, Edison went 10-30 in four seasons with him at the helm, including a 3-7 mark last season. Moses has been with the district for a while in a variety of coaching positions.

“I’ve been with the district for about 15 years, and in that 15 years I’ve coached just about everything,” Moses said. “I have coached football in the past, but ever since I took over as the head basketball coach I have kind of gotten out of it.

“Principal (Matt) Morrison and company have faith in me to get this thing turned around and going in the right direction for this season, so we’re going to do our best to do that.”

With just about a month to go before teams take the field for the 2017 season, a change so late provides challenges Moses said he is prepared for.

“It’s basically going to be a whole new staff when we open up with East Liverpool next month,” Moses said. “We have a lot of guys that are coming in that are not necessarily new to the district, but are new to coaching the team right now.

“We’re bringing in a lot of guys with experience and guys who have had success here at Edison. Add that to the coaches that we are keeping on and I really like our staff. We’re going to have challenges just because it is so late, but at the same time I like what we have.”

According to Moses, he is not really sure what happened to put him in this postion, but he does know it is always tough to take over under these circumstances.

“The only thing that I know is that Coach Stickles resigned at the board meeting,” Moses said. “There’s always rumors but I don’t know what’s true and what’s not.

“The only thing I can tell you for sure is that he resigned and we had to come up with a plan very quickly to get things moving in the right direction, and this is the direction the district went. It’s tough to take over for someone who resigned, especially this late. It’s a challenge, not just for me but for everyone involved. It’s going to be a challenge for the kids, too. It’s a challenge I’m hoping all of us look forward to tackling and getting things moving in the right direction.”

Stickles will remain a teacher in the district, however there has not been a decision on whether he will remain as the wrestling coach. Stagani said Friday’s news was a “football-only decision” and did not comment any further.
