Pirates Fall To Brewers

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Chase Anderson had eight strikeouts in six innings, Domingo Santana homered and the Milwaukee Brewers shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates for the second straight day, 1-0 on Tuesday night.

The Brewers won for the ninth time in 11 games, keeping pace in the NL Central and wild-card races. They won for the fourth time in the past seven days against reeling Pittsburgh, which has lost a season-high seven consecutive games and 12 of 13.

It was the 12th shutout of the season for the Brewers, tied for the second-most in the NL.

Anderson (11-3) allowed five singles. Anthony Swarzak retired six of the seven batters he faced, and Corey Knebel earned a save with a perfect ninth. Seven of his 39 saves this season have come against the Pirates.

Milwaukee remained 3 1-2 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the division lead. After Wednesday’s series finale at PNC Park, the Brewers head back to Milwaukee to host a four-game series against the Cubs.

The Brewers moved within 2 games of Colorado for the second wild-card spot. The Rockies played later Tuesday.

Santana extended his hitting streak to seven games when he turned on a 1-0 slider from Trevor Williams and hit it into the first row at one of PNC Park’s most shallow points, a few feet to the right of the left-field foul pole.

That was one of three hits Williams (6-9) allowed over five innings. But Pittsburgh’s struggling offense offered no support; the Pirates have scored nine runs during their seven-game losing streak.

Anderson was the beneficiary Tuesday, improving to 3-0 this season against Pittsburgh. At one point, he retired 10 consecutive hitters and 13 of 14. But his most impressive work was getting out of a jam in his final inning.

Adam Frazier led off with a single to center and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw. Starling Marte followed with a well-placed bunt single, putting runners at first and third with no outs.

But Anderson struck out Andrew McCutchen, got Josh Bell to fly out weakly to center and induced an inning-ending pop-out from Gregory Polanco.

The Brewers’ bullpen finished the shutout; it has allowed four earned runs over 43 2/3 innings over the past 10 games.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Brewers: RHP Jimmy Nelson had surgery Tuesday to address the rotator cuff strain and partial anterior labrum tear he sustained while diving into a base earlier this month. Nelson had already been ruled out for the season, and his status for the beginning of next season remains in question. “We’re still not going to have an answer (after the surgery), necessarily,” Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. “He’s still got a rehab process that might have a pretty big window of time. We’ll just wait and see.” Nelson leads the Brewers in ERA (3.49) and strikeouts (199) and is second in wins (a career-high 12).

Pirates: Marte was back in the lineup for the first time in five games because of left shoulder and finger discomfort.

Phillies 6, Dodgers 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Rhys Hoskins had four RBIs, including a tiebreaking, three-run double off Pedro Baez in seventh inning that led the Philadelphia Phillies over Los Angeles and prevented the Dodgers from moving closer to the NL West title.

Los Angeles’ magic number to clinch its fifth straight division title remained at three. The Dodgers have lost three consecutive games and 19 of 24.

Cardinals 8, Reds 7

CINCINNATI (AP) — Dexter Fowler hit a tying homer in the eighth inning and a go-ahead double in the 10th, helping the St. Louis Cardinals knock off the Cincinnati Reds.

Yadier Molina and Paul DeJong also connected for St. Louis, which was swept by NL Central-leading Chicago over the weekend and had dropped four of five overall.

Nationals 4, Braves 2

ATLANTA (AP) — Max Scherzer allowed five hits in seven innings, and the Washington Nationals tuned up for the playoffs with a victory over Atlanta Braves.

Scherzer (15-6) bounced back from his worst start of the season, also against the Braves last week, when he walked six and was roughed up for seven runs in an 8-2 loss.

This time, Scherzer struck out seven and walked only one while throwing 83 of 112 pitches for strikes.

Marlins 5, Mets 4, 10 innings

MIAMI (AP) — J.T. Realmuto homered in the 10th inning and the Miami Marlins beat the New York Mets after rallying for three runs in the ninth against former teammate A.J. Ramos.

With one out, Realmuto hit a 1-1 pitch from Paul Sewald (0-6) into the Mets’ bullpen for his 17th homer.

Astros 3, White Sox 1

HOUSTON (AP) — Jose Altuve homered, Alex Bregman hit an RBI double and the AL West champion Houston Astros extended their winning streak to five games with a victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Collin McHugh (3-2) allowed one run and five hits with five strikeouts in five innings for Houston. It was the right-hander’s first outing since detaching a fingernail on his pitching hand Sept. 8.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Red Sox 1, Orioles 0, 11 innings

BALTIMORE (AP) — Jackie Bradley Jr. scored the game’s lone run on a wild pitch by Brad Brach in the 11th inning, and the Boston Red Sox used six pitchers to silence the Baltimore Orioles’ bats in a 1-0 victory Tuesday night.

Boston has won 10 of 13 to move a season-high 23 games over .500 (87-64) and draw closer to clinching a postseason berth. The Red Sox started the day with a three-game lead over the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Blue Jays 5, Royals 2

TORONTO (AP) — Marcus Stroman pitched seven innings to win for the first time in six starts, Darwin Barney hit a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals.

Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon’s solo home run off Ryan Tepera in the eighth was the 5,694th of this major league season, breaking the record set in 2000 at the height of the Steroids Era. The record was broken with just less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Athletics 9, Tigers 8

DETROIT (AP) — Jed Lowrie hit a go-ahead grand slam against Alex Wilson, and the Oakland Athletics overcame a four-run deficit to beat the Detroit Tigers.

Detroit trailed 3-0 in the third inning, then took an 8-4 lead into the seventh, when Ryon Healy hit a bases-loaded grounder to shortstop Jose Iglesias, who bobbled the ball for an error as Lowrie scored.

INTERLEAGUE

Cubs 2, Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Mike Montgomery took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, Kyle Schwarber hit his 28th home run and the Chicago Cubs extended their winning streak to a season-high seven by beating the the Tampa Bay Rays in manager Joe Maddon’s return to Tropicana Field.

Maddon managed the Rays from 2006-14, then left to manage Chicago and last year led the Cubs to their first World Series title since 1908. Chicago entered with a 3Ç-game lead over second-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.
