Wheeling Park, Steubenville End In 2-2 Stalemate

Big Red scores with less than 3 minutes to go to tie game

WHEELING — For most of the game Wheeling Park controlled the tempo and led powerful Steubenville, but the only thing that matters is the final score. And while the Patriots weren’t able to secure a victory, they did not lose.

Park appeared on its way to victory, leading Big Red 2-1 with just under three minutes to play when senior midfielder Ryan Delelles, who had flirted with the net a few times earlier, finally beat Patriots’ keeper Zach Calvert with a 20-footer as their boys’ soccer match ended in a 2-2 draw at Wheeling Island Stadium.

“Steubenville is one of the best teams in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference and this would have been a huge win for us if we could have hung on,” Wheeling Park coach Mario Julian said. “And giving up a goal in the final three minutes is a little tough to swallow, but I know the opponent had a lot to do with that.”

While the Patriots (5-4-4) played the part of the aggressor the majority of the first half, it was actually Big Red (5-1-1) that got off the game’s initial two shots, including a golden opportunity to take the lead.

Delelles had a one-on-one chance against Calvert, who came out of the net to meet Delelles, then made a great save on his shot in the opening minute-and-a-half of the game.

Park sophomore forward Jason Pennybacker got the scoring started at the 32:24 mark of the opening half on a deflected ball off a corner kick.

Sophomore Chris Romanek’s kick sailed just past the goal, however it was knocked back towards Pennybacker, standing directly in front of the net, who tapped it in for the quick 1-0 advantage.

“We really got out-hustled in the first half,” Steubenville coach Greg Bowers said. “We gave them chances and we let our frustrations and emotions get to us.

“That was all discussed at the half and we told them it was gut-check time and that they needed to come out and start playing. This was two games in a row we were down 1-0 at the half, which gives you little time to waste to get going.”

Delelles had another chance, this time on a direct kick from 45 yards away, just over a minute into the second half, but Calvert’s leaping grab of the ball in front of the net prevented any damage.

Big Red finally knotted the count at 37:17 of the second with plenty of traffic clogging up the front of the Patriots’ net. With Park unable to clear the ball, and Calvert moving in every direction waiting for a shot, senior Joseph Venditti was able to get foot on the loose ball and punch it into the back side of the net.

It looked like the Patriots ran into a little bad luck midway through the second half on a call that appeared to be inside the box, but was initially ruled a yard out. However, the officials got together and overturned the call, awarding Park a penalty kick.

That kick was taken by sophomore Louis Aulick, who drilled a laser high into the back of the net, just over the hands of Steubenville keeper Jacob Clevenger to make it a 2-1 score with 26:04 remaining.

“That was a good call on the penalty kick,” Julian said. “The officials did a great job on that, and during the entire game. It was really good to see the center ref go over to the line ref to get things figured out.”

Calvert made another nice save with just over four minutes to play, diving to his left to snag Delelles’ 35-yard rocket out of the air and help maintain Wheeling Park’s slim one-goal margin.

However, Calvert was not as fortunate on Delelles’ next opportunity. The senior dandy once again got free with the ball, drilling a shot from 20 yards away that went under the diving Patriots’ keeper for the game’s final goal and the deadlock.

“I thought this was a great high school soccer game,” Julian said. “We knew how good Ryan (Delelles) was coming in, but he is not their only weapon and #7 (Adam DiCarlo) and their keeper (Clevenger) both played outstanding games.

“Both teams played their hearts out (Tuesday), and I can’t say that a tie is a terrible way for this game to end. We just need to work to keep getting better from here on out.”

Bowers wasn’t happy with his team’s effort throughout, but was about Delelles’ late goal.

“For the second straight game we just had trouble finishing,” Bowers said. “But they kids kept trying to get it going and it’s always a good thing when you score a goal like that late.”
