Yost, Secrist Lead Brooke to Its First Win

WELLSBURG — Looking for its first victory of the 2017 season, Coach Mac McLean was looking for a spark to get his Brooke football team on the winning track.

Enter junior quarterback Gage Yost and senior wide receiver Ethan Secrist, who spent most of Friday night playing catch.

Yost threw for four touchdowns, and ran for another, while Secrist caught six passes for 168 yards and three of those scores as the Bruins pulled away from Perry Traditional Academy to record a 34-20 victory at Brooke Memorial Stadium.

“It’s real nice to get that monkey off our back and get that first win,” McLean said. “And we want to keep it running, but we know we have a real tall order next week with Coach (Andrew) Connor and Indian Creek.

“Ethan (Secrist) and Gage (Yost) both had outstanding games and really got us going, and hopefully that will be something we can build on.”

Things couldn’t have started much worse for the Bruins. However, after an early mistake, things couldn’t have gotten much better.

After Brooke fumbled on its second play from scrimmage, senior Maleik Hemingway needed three plays to cover 37 yards for the Commodores, including a 17-yard scoring burst around the right end. A bad snap from center prevented the kick and it was 6-0 just 1:36 in.

But it didn’t take the Bruins long to knot the score and then cruise into the lead thanks to the arm of Yost and the receiving and running of Secrist.

That duo tied the score at 6-6 with a 37-yard pass and run less than two minutes later with the PAT blocked. After Perry turned the ball over on downs near midfield, Yost and Secrist hooked up again three plays later, this time from 47 yards out with the try for two failing, keeping the score at 12-6.

The Commodores closed the high-scoring first frame with a 43-yard Hemingway tackle-breaking run with just two second remaining, and the count was again deadlocked at 12-12.

Both teams added touchdowns in the second stanza, with special team plays playing a big part. Freshman Aaron Scipio’s 40-yard kickoff return was followed by a 15-yard Perry personal foul call that put the ball on the 26. Brooke ended up with a third-and-18 when Yost went deep and found Tripp Moore for a 34-yard scoring hook-up with the PAT again blocked.

Hemingway’s 30-yard kickoff return then set-up the visitors next score, a 30-yard strike from David Freeman to Jakar Tucker with Hemingway adding the two-point run for a 20-18 lead.

The Bruins managed a time-consuming 12-play march that ended up stalling on downs at the Perry 10 later in the quarter, but managed to grab the lead at the half on another nice drive.

Moving 58 yards, Yost called his own number on a keeper up the middle for a 4-yard score on a third-and-goal call. Yost finished off the same play for the conversion and the hosts led 26-20 at the break.

Brooke extended the lead midway through the third with Yost and Secrist again finishing the deal for the third time on the night. Secrist caught a 10-yard pass on the sideline, broke a tackle and beat the defense to the end zone to complete the 39-yard score. Yost again ran in the two and the Bruins were up 34-20.

Hemingway finished with 117 yards and two touchdowns for Perry before leaving the game with an apparent leg injury midway through the third quarter.

Along with being responsible for five touchdowns, Yost threw for 225 yards, ran in a pair of two-point conversions and intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble on defense.

“Their speed was a big factor early on in the game,” McLean said. “But our defense bent, but got better as the game went on. We are very happy to get that first win, but again, we know the competition is going to get a lot better next week.”
