JM Places Third at Own Invite

MOUNDSVILLE–There is nothing like being thrown into the heat of competition.

Normally, the Monarchs’ wrestling team will have its first match of the season a week before the John Marshall Invitational to get some work in. However, with the football team making a deep playoff run, plans were put on hold for coach Ted Zervos and his grapplers.

Despite the delay on getting the season underway, John Marshall still supplied a solid showing in its opening invite with a third-place finish on Saturday at the John Marshall Fieldhouse.

East Fairmont upended McGuffey in the championship round to claim its first JM Invitational title after years of earning runner-up honors, while Crestview was fourth.

“I like to have a match under our belts before we get to this tournament so we can shake off the rust,” Zervos said.

“But the kids had great success with football this year, which pushed us back about a week but I always promote multiple sports.

“With that being said, I think we had a good day. It was a good level of competition and that is why we do this tournament. I always try to bring in good quality teams because it makes our kids better.

“We are pleased with third place. We had a tight one with McGuffey that might have been different with circumstances with everybody healthy but they have a nice quality team and East Fairmont is just awfully good right now. I was very impressed with what they brought here.”

John Marshall’s only two losses on the afternoon came to the top two finishers as it fell to McGuffey, 43-27, and East Fairmont, 46-21.

The Monarchs collected victories over Buckhannon-Upshur and Ripley before defeating Crestview in the battle for third.

Leading the Monarchs on the mat were heavyweight Brady Williams and 145 pounder Jordan Wood, who each delivered perfect 5-0 records on the day.

Anthony Carman turned in four wins in the 160-pound bracket, while teammate Gabe McCardle also tallied four wins as he split between the 220 and 195 classes.

Ethan Gray recorded four wins for John Marshall in the 113 class.

“Our kids showed good signs here (Saturday),” Zervos said. “They learned how to win tough matches and their competitive streak was definitely there.

“Jordan Wood had a very good day and Anthony Carman had a good day.

“We bumped Carmen up a weight class where he took a one-point loss. Our heavyweight, Brady Williams, also had a nice day.

“We had a lot of junior leadership (Saturday) and we are looking to have a solid team all season.”
